"Ruby Rollers: All The Birmingham You Need"...Tony Chavarria

“WELCOME!” Thank you for visiting.

My name is Tony Chavarria. I have been breeding Birmingham Rollers since 1993 from rollers I received from Sal Estrada, a friend with whom I grew up with in Paramount, California back in the 1970’s and early 1980’s.

We even had pigeons back then and often tagged along with Dennis Hayes who lived in Southern California at the time on a few of his many visits to the lofts of Frank Lavin and Bob Scott, some of the finest breeders in California at the time.

It was during these visits, listening to these guys and seeing real rollers burn up the sky with performance that I began to really appreciate what a Birmingham Roller can do in the air. It was from these memories that I began my quest to breed the best possible Birmingham Rollers I could.

I started breeding Birmingham Rollers again in 1993 thanks to Sal who had gotten back into them a 903SideViewfew years before getting me started again. He was generous enough to provide me with 20 birds and access to his breeding stock.

I am forever grateful to Sal for his generosity as he has won numerous local flys and developed a reputation as a fine breeder whose pigeons are highly desired by those that know good birds.

Over the years, I have established my own strain of Birmingham Rollers I call Ruby Rollers from an awesome cock bird (LPRC 93 903). This foundation cock bird I call “903” could roll 20 to 30 feet regularly with great style and velocity. It just did everything right in the air and the ground!

Within 2 years, 903 was in the stock pen where it went on to produce a Red Check Badge daughter “517”, a little check badge hen with a cracked eye. 517 was another bird that could spin 20 to 30 feet and just proved to be a perfect breeding match for 903.

792SideViewAlmost everything from this pair was of the best quality and soon I had many outstanding proven spinner cocks and hens which have become the foundation of my Ruby Roller breeding stock.

For those who find the pedigrees helpful, you will see a tightly bred family of high quality Birmingham Rollers made up of offspring from 903 and 517.

Some have described Ruby Rollers as a good looking bird on the perch as they seem
to possess the look you would expect from a quality line of Birmingham Rollers.

As for performance; a kit of well managed Ruby Rollers will provide all the action you would want to see. ¼, ½ to ¾ turns are possible with this family. Performance is fast with good style, 20 to 30 feet deep more or less. They do it with good style, velocity and control.

In my book “How To Breed Better Rollers” which can be purchased from Foys Pigeon Supply, I talk about the “5 Primary Traits” that have been my main focus of breeding and selection over the years with my Ruby Roller strain.MealyBar1

My goal has always been to pair up my best rollers demonstrating these 5 Primary Traits. I now get a high percentage of quality rollers from this breeding stock. This is another one of the benefits of line-breeding and proper selection: consistency.

The 5 Primary Traits I breed for:

1. Roll
2. Velocity
3. Depth
4. Control
5. Type

It is generally accepted that starting with the right roller pigeons is critical in getting a good start in Birmingham Rollers and will save you years of time, frustration and money and at the same time provide years of enjoyment and satisfaction!

While some breeders (myself included) have been able to loan or give pigeons away, there is a practical limitation to this practice. Not everyone that wants good birds can get them free or at just any time of the year. They are not always available.

RubyRollerLoft_1However, those interested in getting a good start with Birmingham Rollers can find quality birds available at our Ruby Roller Lofts all year long. We can breed year round because we have heavily invested in a specially built breeding loft which is equipped with heaters, winter insulation and automatic lighting to simulate a spring day-every day through the fall and winter!

We continually strive to maintain the quality and ideal of the Birmingham Roller. With the help of fosters (aka pumpers) we are able to rotate our breeding stock on a regular basis.

I do not make wild and outrageous claims about the having the best rollers in the world or other RubyRollerLoft_2exaggerations. What I can say is many of our clients tell us getting Ruby Rollers was the best thing they did.

Ruby Rollers are a solid family of Birmingham Roller pigeons bred from competition winning stock that will do what they were bred to do and that is ROLL with VELOCITY, DEPTH and CONTROL and look good on the perch: TYPE.

This site is dedicated to the Ruby Roller which is my strain of Birmingham Roller Pigeons.

We offer any guidance that we can to our past and current clients as well as those that are considering buying a pair of young birds or even a kit of 10 or 20 Ruby Rollers for competition flying or enjoyment in the backyard.

If you have any questions about the Ruby Rollers or delivery time, I am happy to answer them. Be sure to check the Frequently Asked Questions page, many of your questions might be answered there.
