George I'm not relly giving it much thought this early, right now I'm concentrating on fishing and flying youngsters.
I will be pulling the 8-10th flights here real quick on the old birds so that they won't moulting them in during the Fall fly season.

Same here. October is a long way off and like Scott, I will pluck and park my old birds and any potentally good young ones until the middle of September. I just fly the young ones during the summer months.

George,
We don't fly till Oct. for the fly time. And the birds will be moulting during this time. So the feed and water is very curcial. I know a few people that pulls the flights to help the moult along. Not help but to have them moulted out all the way by then. So they wont be to sore when you get them ready. Just enjoy the time to get a few young birds out. Trust me it will be here before you know it.
Brian

George. Our region is flying Aug.26,27 & 28th.I am scrambling to try and get a young kit together.Whatever I have when the time comes is what I will fly.LOL.They will only be 7 month old.It usually is very, very hot around this time but the hawks shouldn,t be to bad yet.Looks like we are going to get enough together to be able to fly the region this year.Unless something happens and some don't fly.David

Our region usually flys in August. I'm concentrating on the new stock I'm breeding and they won't be ready. I'll fly both W.C. and F.F. in 06 Lord willin'!

If all goes well I will be able to compete in the FF. I am flying y/b`s so the 11 bird will definitely be a consideration.
I think I am lucky in the aspect of when the competetions come to my area. The w/c regional is in mid April and the FF is in late October. The wind is usually down and coming from a direction advantageous to viewing the kit.

Brian. You are the one that helped me get my kits straightened out earlier when I couldn,t get them above treetop high.Plus all the other things you have shared with everyone that I have printed off and read it quite often about flying.
I know you fellas won,t believe this but(Gospel Truth) the whole week I was trying to get them ready I kept asking myself what would Brian,Scott & Kenny do.
I have went over the fly in my head so many times and I don,t know what caused the birds to perform that well.It just happens when everything falls into place.I will probably never see them perform that well again but now I may be hooked.LOL. David

Thanks Kenny.I was talking to our judge(Dale Harshman) yesterday by phone and found out he is a good friend of yours. He was also telling me how good your birds are.I know they are.I keep looking at your score last year. That would have been a sight for anyone to see.You have raised the bar for all of us. Steve.Sorry to hear about your losses.KGB just lost some good birds because of Hawks. It is getting worse each year.I lost my best roller to a Hawk a month before our fly.I know how much it hurts. It isn,t so bad when they take a weaker bird out of the kit but when they hit the hard working ones it really gets to a fellow.
I am at that point now.I need to keep the kit ready for the Finals but how can I fly them when the Hawks are hitting them everyday.I guess just feed them up with younger birds and hope for the best.David

David, since you will want to fly in the finals (obviously) which who knows when that will begin, your best bet is to put together about two cull kits to fly before you fly your good kit. That is the only way you will be able to do it without sustaining major losses.

Brian.I flew 3 kits this morning before putting up the good kit.Don,t you know a Hawk hit the good kit about 15 minutes into the fly and now I am missing the little Silver Check hen.Didn,t see it catch it so I have been checking about every half hour hoping. It is something that goes along with rollers I guess.David

Way to go, David. You did yourself and your family of birds proud. While we were in Denver at the meeting, a friend who was feeding and flying my A kit called whoopin' and hollerin' saying my A-kit was smokin'....at least five full turns he says..."You could have competed with anybody on that day" "How'd we do that?" I asked him! LOL LOL I'll score some points, but with Jay Yandle, Joe Bob and Clay Hoyle in my region, all who have won or place in the top ten consistently, I really can't expect too much...just some points. Cliff,Big Al: Yes it feels good to win but on the other hand when it is your first competition fly and you get a good score like I did where do you go from there?Anything less than what they did this time will seem like a failure.I would have perfered to have a low score and worked my way up.Now there is no where to go but down.LOL.That Big Wheel of Life just keeps turning.David

Brother Dave,
You can't go down man! You've already proven yourself to be a good rollerman. You worked hard, showed patience, good training and breeding. You may have a bad day or two in the future but we all get those.
Hold your head up and be proud of a great accomplishment.
I don't know you but you seem like a cool fella' and I'm proud for you!
See you in the roll!

Good Job Dave! I am glad that you got some good stores. I know you made the comment that anything else will be unacceptable....That is true....but just remember....you could get 5 points next time....but you know what ...it does not matter...because you have proved yourself!...Hell Look at Scott in the world cup...He got a big DQ...but everyone knows his birds have the stuff...Now everyone knows that your birds do>>>>Again CONGRATS! All that really matters is that you through your hat in the ring...5 or 500 you earned respect!

Thanks Everyone for the kind and encouraging words. But the Fact is if it wasn,t for fellows like Scott,KGB,Brian and all you other fellows on this forum and others teaching and coaching me I would never have entered a Competition.
I never consider it work as I enjoy the whole roller hobby.Breeding,Training,Raising & Flying them just for my Backyard pleasure. There is nothing more rewarding and relaxing than watching from an egg to a roller doing a good roll.I realy enjoy watching a kit come together and working as a team. That is the most relaxing times.Well except for the Hawks.
This Competition thing is very High Tension and exciting too.LOL.I can see how it would make you strive to breed a better roller. In my case I am better off not messing with the birds.I will screw things up Big Time.LOL.
I would now say that if you have never competed in a compitition to give it a try.It actually is a lot of fun and a Bonus is you get to meet some of the finest people in the World.
As I said somewhere before this started out somewhat as a joke as I wanted to fly a mixed up kit with a lot of different things in it.I left 2 birds in the kit just to see how a Judge would score them.I had one that I have never seen do a 10 foot roll.Usually 8 or 9 foot max.The other was a Plate roller that had good speed and was fairly frequent and unless you knew what it was it still put on a show. When I was talking to the judge the next day He told me that I had 2 birds in the kit that hurt my score. They were these 2 birds. He said they may look good to some but He just couldn,t score them.I was really impressed with this and it told me a lot I wanted to know about judges. They can,t be perfect but I feel confident that they are as close as they can be.
But I did find out something else that is a valuable lesson to me.Of course I pulled these 2 rollers out of the kit and guess what. The plate roller is the one that is holding the kit together. So I guess I will be letting it in the kit for now.Didn,t mean to get long winded but as you can probably tell I am still a little Spaced out.LOL.
Someone said to take a Bow.I will do so. First to God who makes all things possible. To the Kit for putting on a good show.To James Turner for 45+ years of Dedication to the Family of Rollers. To my Good Friend Bob McGuan who is always there for me.To George Mason & Bill Pensom. To all you fellows that encouraged & coached me to get me to fly and last but not least my Wife who stands behind me and tolerates me spending so much time with the rollers.David
