Who would want to see anything other than a clean exit coming out of a hrd spin ? anything other than a clean exit is nothing more that a bird trying to regain control and in my book (and most that I know) is a flaw in the roll. Just my opinion Scott

Bluesman,
Is it a performance or just a flaw of a bird that can't come out of the spin correctly?
What about "mad tumbling?" What is that?

I have a few birds that do some weird stuff. Many of them with do this twizzle but only once or twice at a time and only when they are taking off.
I have one bird that will tumble single flips to come down and pauses a little between each flip as he falls. I know it's not ideal for competition but it's entertaining. That's all I'm interested in anyway.
Maybe breeding for a performing standard has taken out many of these unusual performances. Another one I like is a deep tail ride and even a 100 foot spin. But of course they aren't ideal for competition. In most cases a 100 foot spin is not very fast and tight. I also like a lot of wing clapping.

What did Bill Pensom know anyway? He didn't even compete! Geeesssh!!
Has time moved on and our expectations changed? Hense, our standards are changing, maybe?
Maybe, only a few had birds who could perform in this matter so they changed the rules and standards over the years? This is kinda the case for this years 11 Bird competition ain't it?
Should we treat Bill Pensom as just another superior breeder who had his own ideas or do we look at him as the giver and creator of this sport. The writer of the Roller "bible" sort of speak.
I don't know, just some questions.

In 40 years, a breed will change. Now, if it's for the better or worse, I don't know.

I like what I see in the rollers today a whole lot more than I did in the 50s & 60s.To me they have come a long way in performance.I am sure it has a lot to do with handling and now that we can communicate with everyone in the world that has a computer I feel they will continue to look better. Wing Clapping;I hate it.LOL. David

Bluesman, I agree.....I too like what I see in the birds today as compared to the 50's and 60's. I had a lot of birds that looked like rollers, but didn't roll and the few it did roll were slow and clumsey looking and not very frequent. I think we train and handle our birds much better today and we have developed good breeding practices.
Much of the success is in the communications. The computer gives us access to all the information (GOOD OR BAD).
All breed standards have changed over the years and they will continue. We just have to make sure the changes do not make the breed less then what it was.
Opinion only

I have been reading this months NBRC bulletin and from what I gather Pensom was kinda closed minded and had some shall I say odd opinions about rollers. In the early days any action was scorable. The rollermen who were more intersted in flying than showing were ostracized by the "pedigree" crowd. When they flew their birds for performance they were actually penalized for what we would deem a great performance. So the standard has changed and Pensom was an ass according to James Graham. Gee they had color battles back then too. lol

V99, Pensom changed over the years as he gained knowledge and you will see that in jis later writings, Gram bred a different type of bird. Where are his today ? Where are the Pensoms ? I think that history tells the story.
