My Kit boxes all have wire floors.Whatever light is from the floors.By next Spring I plan on having a slide in under the wire floors to darken it thru the main part of the Breeding Season.I have had a bunch of birds wanting to breed this year.I never had this problem when I had solid floors in the boxes.I fly my birds often so I don,t have any other light sources. I don't darken my kitboxes, expecially this time of year I want them open and airy.
I can darken if I wish though, I just don't see any benefit from it other than some B.S. type of active stimulation when first released. And nor do I get eggy hens due to fly and condition.

My kit boxes get fair amount of day light and I am able to darken it if needed. It is specially good during hawks migration season and during winter season when I am unable to fly the birds. The only -ve thing I noticed is that birds start to get paired up if lot of day light provided.

Here in Ohio, I use the same kitbox for summer flying and winter flying. There is a wire bottom floor and a vented area between the rafters of the kitbox. I use a settling cage when training young birds. It sits over the trap door and extends upwards over the roof. But once the birds gets use to trapping in and there surrounds then the trap door is kept close. And the settling cage comes off. You can get a view on how much light hits the inside of my boxes if you look on my site.

Hi guys,

I too have wire floors on a double kit cage a friend of mine Eddie Verdugo built for me. I built a tray that slides on the bottom of it so there's not quite as much light as there would be. However my box is designed so I can open a portion of each double door that exposes screen for light, additional ventilation, and observation of the birds without opening the entire door. I don't think theres much difference in having a dark or lightened kit box regarding performance. Performance is a direct result of training and conditioning.
I think having a lot of ventilation is good for this time of year especially in the high desert where I live. The only problem I see is if there's a very lighted box and the birds are being over-fed they could drop an egg or two if it's breeding season. However experienced roller guys usually won't have that happen too often.
See you in the roll...

My kit boxes are open most of the year. I keep the boxes open so the air can get in...in a 104 dergree day...you need all the air movement that you can. I have found no benefit in the roll by no giving the birds light. My boxes are made so that you can cover the front screen opening. During the winter when it is really windy and raining...I will cover the screen. That is basically the only time that I close up the boxes.
