Hi guys,
Just curious... How many rounds will you breed from a first time pair at any given time.
In other words say you put down a pair in Feb how many youngsters will you breed from that pair? Again this is a first time pair.

Al, I run them as long as I run the rest of the breeders. The only exception would be those I yank from the A team after the WC to mate up for a couple of quick rounds, just to test some birds out. I like to make sure and get at least four rounds from a first time pair. Proven pairs are proven. In my opinion, new pairings need several rounds to fully see what they are capable of.

Thanks Brian,
I agree. I was talking with a friend the other day trying to explain why I'm breeding 5 rounds from my new pairs. When you take into consideration predators, over - flys, sick birds etc... you could be down to only 1 bird if you've only bred 4. 1 bird is not enough to determine the legitimacy of a new pair. Besides I use pumpers to help out.

I have let my breeders get spread out on me. I have them coming in 2`s and 4`s. I kinda like it. It is easier in me to train 4 at a time versus 12. I did like the fact that the 10 I trained at once kitted the first time up. I am running four rounds this year . Most of my birds are younger birds. In this season of building a kit I am fostering the eggs from one pair. A black self w/f hen and a griz cock. They have thrown a griz and a black self w/f three times now. The black ones are pretty good and the griz`s are a bit stiff but scorable. I just pulled a set of eggs and fostered them. I may run one more round then shut them down for the FF. This pair are two of my best rollers. I have to fly them this fall if I have am to have a chance of competing. If the y/b`s turn out and they come out of the breeder pen and roll for me again I will have identified my click pair.

I might foster a few rounds this winter in the garage. I have some 2x2x2 breeder pens. This will be an experimental run for me. How much light and what temperature do I need to mainitain for the chicks to survive? Could I put a heating pad under the cages?

If they are newly stocked I use them as fosters and concentrate on the established stock birds, I will let them knock a round here and there.
There are exceptions though also.
If it is a new pair of "proven" stock then I will knock at least 3 rounds out.
