Hey Riaan, welcome to the board! The heading to this thread is “How can one make birds more active”. By the actual text in your post, do you mean “to be in a better state of health”? If so, a healthy bird will be more active in the absence of disease and stress.
Promote good health by ensuring its living conditions are optimal; plenty of room, clean and proper feed and clean water, plenty of air and protection from the elements.
Once these factors have been addressed, medicating and providing supplements are appropriate measures at this point if birds are still less than active.
An inexpensive “tonic” is Apple Cider Vinegar; it changes the Ph level in the bird so that illness is less likely to take hold as the conditions for its propagation has been eliminated or at least minimized from the bird.
Another way to diagnose problems is to monitor the droppings, anything besides a firm and solid dropping is a sign of a problem or illness.
Can you provide more information? Specifically, what problems are you seeing? Discolored droppings, birds dying, looking listless, over crowding, etc.

Epson salt does definetely work. Given approx. (4) days before you want the birds to work, it will bring out more frequency in them. There are also different feeding programs that you can use right before a fly, but each stock can respond differently to different programs. Richard

Hi Riaan, Don't feel bad, we've all been there at one time or another! LOL! Your question was about getting the birds active... First a few questions... Are the birds the same age give or take a couple months? Are they from the same family? If they are young birds what did you wean them on? What are you feeding them now? How much are you giving 20 birds? Temperatures are about 100 - 105 degrees in the High Desert where I live. Is it that hot where you are and if it is what time of the day are you flying your birds? Do you feed in the evening and fly early the next morning? How long have they been inactive? Are any of the birds attempting activity? What have you done with those?
When all is said and done I've always felt that the 2 F's are the key to everything... Family and Feed. Once you've got a hold on the above questions a feeding program can easily be done to get them going. Let me know what you find! ---------- Big Al "High Plains Spinner Loft"

Riaan, I forgot to ask... How often are you flying these birds? With some families once the kit has developed into a consistent hard working team showing you good stuff, flying them everyday is not a good idea and will cause them to go flat for a while. Otherwise I have an idea for your birds. ---------- Big Al "High Plains Spinner Loft"

Be very careful with that epson salt, it can poison your birds !!!!!!!!!! personally I never touch it nor have I had a need for it. My guess is that your birds have matured and need to be handled different, flying like you are I would guess that are strong. The red corn, are you referring to Milo ?

I would be hitting those birds with some protein , Milo/Wheat is great for short perionds of time but just Milo/Wheat is like living on bread.
