A bird that rolls a blur,if she comes to sit she has two horn like feathers on her head. It only lasts for 45 seconds, it only happens once in a while to come accross in a bird like this (I have photos, but I dont know how to attach.) Has anyone seen this before?

The horns sticking up on the side of the head is an indication that a bird is rolling.. They don't have to be blurring in the roll or even rolling fast to show the horns on the side of the head.. I often have birds land and have the little horns sticking up.. Its not unusual to have half a dozen or more looking this way after a fly.. What I like to see are those birds that come down looking destroyed. Their feathers are hanging kind of loose and their feathers are shuffled. The wings kind of droop and the bird almost looks as if it can't fly another stroke.. I have a few of these, and they are hard workers who give it their all while flying.. Just my take.. I agree with KGB (mongrel) that just because some birds show the turned up feathers on the sides of the head when landing, that doesn't mean they are super fast. I notice at least one or two every day, but usually it is on a bird that has been rolling A LOT. I would rather see them looking as KGB described, with wings drooped, feathers all messed up and a dazed look in their eyes. That's a pigeon that has been rolling hard! Brian.

Hi Brian,
In four years this was the first one I saw with these "horns". I also have birds that look destroyed after a flight but find the horns more impressive. Maybe a good thing that each has his own preference, makes the world more interesting.

Hey Riaan, thanks for the submission on the Devil Ear Rollers. I created a web page along with the pictures. I wish I could have done a better job with the pictures. Thanks for contributing the article. Devils Ear Rollers

Riaan, tell me more about that family of birds. What are they down from ? I was surprised to her that they are 90 something percent dark checkers (as mine are) I know that Neible imported birds over there that are mainly blue based, are these down from the Neible imports ? if so are they crossed ? Hi Scott. The family originate out of two cocks "Ollie Harris and a Ken White/Ollie Harris cross".Both these pigeons had the same father. The orignal two Ollie Harris cocks were imported in 1974.We bred from the cocks from 1984to 1989 then they introduced a bluebar Bill Barriet hen. This is the combination we use today.{we only got peal white eyes in this family no other colour)
