Especially interested if you have some of Tony's birds but I'd love to have contact with anyone close that has rollers. Thanks! Darin

Ken,
Thanks for your response. That is awesome to hear that we actually have a club that flys in Idaho. Too bad you are four hours away. I have family in Boise however and I need to visit them soon so that would be a great chance to meet you and see some birds in the air. When is your next competition? Do you have an email address where I can contact you? I currently don't have any birds but am very seriously considering getting some.
My story is that I used to raise homing pigeons starting about age 14 and getting rid of my birds at about 19 years of age when I moved from my parents home. During that time though I had a friend give me a pair of Birmingham Rollers and I was absolutely in love. Then one day, about 6 months after I got them, a cat got in my loft through the trap and killed them both. Needless to say I was extremely upset. I had one pair of young from them and they were killed also. Now I'm 39, have five boys who I think would love rollers, and am at a point in my life when I can get into it seriously.
My current dilemna however is that we are considering moving in the next 12 to 18 months and I don't know that I want to build a loft and get started and then have to move everything at that time. So I'm currently debating what to do.
I have been on the internet reading everything I can find about rollers and came across this site which I really enjoy. Tony seems to be a great guy and I've considered getting a kit of birds from him if and when I decide to get back into it. Do you know anything about Tony's birds?
Finally, please tell me about you and your birds. Where do your birds come from? Are most of the fanciers in Kuna raising birds from your same strain? Do any of you have any of Tony's birds and if so, what do you think of them? I want to make sure that if I do get birds, I get the absolute best quality I can and it appears Tony really puts alot of effort into his strain and is on the right track so I'm just curious to hear about them from someone who's purchased them. I have read and recognize a few apparently "big names" for bird quality such as those that come from Pensom but I honestly don't really know where to go and Tony seems to be offering the best that I can find online. Maybe you have some insight on a different direction? In any event, I really appreciate your response and would love to come see your birds! Thanks! I can be reached by email at olson22170@msn.com

Darin, pending Ken's response, can I just give you some feedback from someone, not dissimilar in age and situation to yourself - oh, alright, I'm nearly 49, so somewhat older.
I last kept pigeons in my late teens and gave up for the same reason - a bastard cat entered the loft and killed everything. I have to be honest and admit it's altered my attitude towards little kitty for all this time later. Have you read the long, long, post on here about cats? There's one guy who put his head above the parapet and said roller guys were mean and neanderthal for shooting at those pet cats which played with rollers. The sheer venom which he was confronted with surprised me, but gladdened my heart. I believe, that if people buy pets which roam and destroy much in their path, they run the risk that their dearly beloved will meet a similar fate.
Anyhow, enough of cats.
I started again just a few months ago and rollers weren't necessarily top of the agenda - I quite fancied some West of England Tumblers, having had the odd one back in the distant past. However, the one and only internet advert in England was for rollers and, as I'd had a couple of those as well, I was up for it. I've got a huge garden (yard) and have been very busy building lofts. The first 14 birds which arrived by post one day this April, were the start of all things roller.
The guys who are established in this game - and there are many on this forum alone - have different problems to the basic ones you will face in the beginning. I read books and articles galore; I even had a guru in the name of Graham Dexter (one of the book authors), yet the pitfalls in the early stages were significant. Settling old birds was a pig and the ones which did stay wanted to breed, so they didn't want to fly. I had to feed them well because I wanted youngsters from them, so they were fat and lazy.
It was all of this (oh, and losing half of my original birds) which made me turn to George Mason. I'd had enough of sub-standard birds (bless them, I've still got many of them for fosters later). I had to dig deep, but what a difference. Within a couple of weeks I was flying proper rollers - youngsters which could be trained.
So, you're right on the money there about good stock: don't waste your time with anything sub-standard; if your pocket is deep enough, go for the best you can. I'm hundreds of miles away from roller clubs (though I've joined one), so I can't just drop in and see a guy's rollers. Next year, perhaps.
In terms of your house move, by that time you will be much more experienced and although you run the risk of some of your old birds trying to get back to their old loft (and probably failing miserably), they will know you, so the odds are probably more in your favour in terms of settling them at your new home.
Cheers.

((((( Hi Darin, the best fly to come down on would be the NBRC national fly.. It should be around Spet 9th or so.. Our judge will be flying in from Texas.. I'm sure you would enjoy the kits as they should be in top order for the National fly.. You can e-mail me at extravelocity95@aol.))))

((( Darin, just build prefab lofts, so they are easy to move,, a couple bolts and wall fold up and off you go..LOL )))

((( No I don't know anything about Tony's birds.. Get out and see some kits fly before you buy rollers Darin.. The best way is to see the birds fly and pick the kind of birds you want to fly..)))
