Hey all,
Well, I have been flying my birds hard lately, but they really aren't up to par. Some of them were really coming into the roll nicely but now they just flip or do a tumble or two. I am guessing this is because of the moult, does anyone else have this problem with their birds at this time of year?? I talked to Highroller and he said that his birds also, aren't up to par because of the moult. Any tips or suggestions to get them back to the top of their game??
Thanks, Caleb

That is just part of the Molt. My birds have kind of shut down too. I think it is a combination of the heat and the molt. I am trying to get them through it as fast as possible. Some guys will fly through the molt and some will lock them down. I myself fly through the molt....but they are not flown as hard. Right now I have two birds that want to come down early...I know that it is the molt...so I let them rest and feed them up...I do not want them to learn any bad habits. For me...I do not really care to much about how they are performing during the molt...I just keep them a little rich on the food and let mother nature takes its course....but when they are through the molt...it is show time...they better perform..

Caleb, This time of year is the pits due to heat and moult, personally I love Nov - Dec flying , birds are through the moult and cooler weather has set in, and yet extream weather hasn't {hopefully), the Y/Bs really start coming along at this time also which really makes it exciting

I have cut back to flying once every three days. Some of mine look buckshot. I figger if I fly three day intervals I can keep a better eye on the moult.I don`t think I will have as much trouble getting them back in shape after the moult. yits v99

I continue to fly every other day. I had been feeding them up for a week or so to help with the moult then I cut back because of lack of performance and a few wanting to stay out for hours. After two or three days of cutting the feed back they were performing great. My question now is if I continue to feed them up for a while and then cut back will this yo-yo type feeding prolong the moult? Summer is my fly time...hawks get real bad in October, sometimes as early as September and I really don't want to lock down for a while now for the moult. Dan

Feed some oil seed during the moult and a higher protein diet , not simply more seed. Black sunflower, safflower, canary and hemp seed are pretty oily. You can also put a bit of cod liver oil in the seed can , just enough to luster the seeds. There was an article in the last bulletin that was pretty informative about the particular seed.
