Hey everybody, Your opinions... If you know for sure it's the cock with the problem, what would make one unable to impregnate a hen? Big Al "High Plains Spinner Loft"

A bird can be a dud regardless of age. I know of a fellow here who tried breeding out of a 2 year old cock last year. He stated he rotated him on 2 different hens and produced no fertile eggs. He also had a 3 year old hen that produced duds as well last year. I believe in good genes. Longevity especially. If they go infertile that early, there is seriously something wrong with that bird and I wouldn't want those genes to live beyond that bird. If the bird is breeding material in the air and is a dud (fertility wise) in the stock loft, I would keep it in the air. This goes with all stock birds regardless of age. It is a different story if you can't get a old stock bird to fly correctly because it has been in the stock loft for way too long. If it is a dud, keep it in the kit box for life. I'm planning on breaking in my 12 year old foundation hen back in the kit box next year because she has gone baren on me. Thor

Hi Thor,
This is a cock I got from another guy who flys great birds. He pulled it from his kit so it's never been in the stock loft. It's an "04" bird. I don't plan on mixing it with the current family I'm working with but thought I'd experiment a little with he and a couple of other hens. So far he's done nothing with two hens! He treads, drags they'll feed each other and go through all the courting rituals but no eggs. I know the hens are fine I just wonder what could cause this problem in a first time cock? Does he need Viagra?! LOL!!! ---------- Big Al "High Plains Spinner Loft"

Al, try cutting the tail off about one inch long on the cock, as well as trimming the vent area, especially on the bottom side for the cock and trim the top side for the hen. Add some vitamin B12 to the water and cross your fingers...lol. Seriously, it does work sometimes. Brian.

Hi Big Al. You said; He treads, drags they'll feed each other and go through all the courting rituals but no eggs Not getting any eggs are not the cocks fault.Did I misunderstand what you meant or is the hen laying eggs but they are not fertile? David

Some times it is the cock's fault Blue... I say this because I have two tame cocks that barely would drive their hens. Their pair usually are the slowest to lay. Altho the weather, the moult, and the lighting conditions play a huge role in the laying of eggs by the hen. These above problem can usualy be solved by a relentless driving cock bird. If the hens aren't laying anything at all, it has nothing to do with the fertility of the cock. The more a cock drives a hen, the quicker she will lay. Either lay or die of hunger. (grin) If they are mating and the hens aren't laying, the cock isn't driving the hens enough. Thor

When (2) hens mate to each other, they both lay eggs. Cocks only fertilize. Richard

Hi guys, I think my question may be misunderstood by some so I'll elaborate a little better. The hens have been mated to other cocks before and are fine. The cock is an "04" bird who was pulled out of a friends kit and has never mated, so this was the first attempt. He won't be a part of my current family but I wanted to use him as a project bird for a while. He drags, coos and treads the hens but I never see him mount them?? They're willing! I won't waste much more time with him but did want to hear some opinions about what his problem could be.- See you in the roll--------- Big Al "High Plains Spinner Loft"
