Hi Big Al
I am still the novice in the club, but flew a champion kit in the last competition.Everybody wants your recipe! I am busy crossing my 20 year old family with MASONS.(My family has got the best quality but lacked in big busts or so I thought)I have now stopped with the crossing. My kit broke 8 times in the first 5 minutes and everybody said they were over-active but then settled and then flew an impressive figure 8 and bust on the corners. Thanks again! I patented the recipe in S.A.(management is 90% of our sport) your friend in the sport

David my man how are you? The feed program I suggested for Riaan was specific to his particular kit symtoms. I based it on age, training frequency, his current feed program, whether the birds were from the same family or not and a few other things. I'd love to share it on the forum but have emptied the trash in my e-mail so I no longer have it. It was one I created on the spot as I read his kit info. Hopefully if he reads this post he'll post it for you if he saved it. To get a better understanding of why I chose this feed program Riaan would have to copy and paste the original posts regarding this issue, and then the program I gave him. Or you can read the original posts from July 21, 2005 Topic... "How can one make birds more active." Then he can just post what I e-mailed. Wish I could remember it all!! LOL!! I'm getting old man!! LOL!!! See you in the roll ---------- Big Al "High Plains Spinner Loft"

Big Al.Getting old Huh.I know what you mean.I always say; I might be getting old but I had a lot of fun getting here.LOL. The reason I asked about your secret is I collect everyones different ways of feeding.I try everything and know that what works today will probably not work the next day.Sometimes just a small variation of a certain grain can make a difference depending on what the kit is doing.By collecting all these different ways and making notes has come in handy many times. Some will say that you can,t tell someone what to do unles you are standing under the kit. Brian McCormick is approx.3000 miles from me and just by me telling him what my birds were doing has told me what to do and it worked. Not just once but several times. Like what you told Riann. This comes from knowing rollers and everyone can't do it. Gonna be another hot one today. My birds are screaming to give them a break.LOL.Got the Fall fly coming up the last weekend of this month.I figure they can do all the breaking they want to on that day. Then again they just might. The wrong way.LOL. David my man, Sorry it took so long to reply. Thanks for the nice words! You're right it just takes being around these birds for a while to know what's happening with them. In most cases I don't need to be there if I have the right info on the kit and it's habits. You were also right when you said what works one day may not work the next! I've seen that too! LOL! It's also nice you can rely on Brian for tips here and there. I think I live relatively close to him here in California although we've never met. I like his posts and he seems to be a great credit to our hobby.
I actually like your idea of getting the various feeding ideas and making note of them. That has to come in handy! I'm actually kind of curious to know if his birds (Riaan) have stayed more active since. Below are the communications Riaan and I had leading to the quick fix recipie I gave him. I enjoy reading your posts and hope to meet you some day! You also are a rollerman with great knowledge of the hobby and it would be my pleasure. See you in the roll!!
Riaan and Big Al... Subject: How can one make birds more active
HI i wonder if you can help me, Iv heard that some people use epson salts, apple vinager ?I want to get my birds more frequend in the roll Your friend in the sport Riaan
Hi Riaan, Don't feel bad, we've all been there at one time or another! LOL! Your question was about getting the birds active... First a few questions... Are the birds the same age give or take a couple months? Are they from the same family? If they are young birds what did you wean them on? What are you feeding them now? How much are you giving 20 birds? Temperatures are about 100 - 105 degrees in the High Desert where I live. Is it that hot where you are and if it is what time of the day are you flying your birds? Do you feed in the evening and fly early the next morning? How long have they been inactive? Are any of the birds attempting activity? What have you done with those? When all is said and done I've always felt that the 2 F's are the key to everything... Family and Feed. Once you've got a hold on the above questions a feeding program can easily be done to get them going. Let me know what you find! ---------- Big Al "High Plains Spinner Loft"
HI BIG AL a) All birds give and take the same age. b) And the same family. c) 2 years old. d) Wheat and red corn. e) 18 tabelspoons. f) Fly early morning. g) And feed early mornings. h) To long, two months. Riaan, I forgot to ask... How often are you flying these birds? With some families once the kit has developed into a consistent hard working team showing you good stuff, flying them everyday is not a good idea and will cause them to go flat for a while. Otherwise I have an idea for your birds. ---------- Big Al "High Plains Spinner Loft"
Hi big Al I only fly them on weekends.....maybe sometimes during the week once! Hope you can help!!! Your friend in the sport... Riaan
Riaan, Give me your e-mail and I'll send you some ideas I think will work for you. See you in the roll... ---------- Big Al "High Plains Spinner Loft"
HI big Al This is my email riaannaude@webmail.co.za Your friend in the SPORT Riaan
Riaan See your e-mail... ---------- Big Al "High Plains Spinner Loft"
E-mail… Hey my friend! Nice corresponding with you. Well the first thing I see is that your birds aren't being flown on a schedule that would have them in good flying condition. If not every other day, every 2 days is good for bird 2 years old.. We need to get them flying on some sort of schedule like I mentioned but feeding them less. First we have to get them going again! Try this... Sunday... don't fly birds but feed 20 birds 15 tablespoons of red wheat only. (Give grit) Monday... don't fly birds but feed 12 tablespoons of wheat. Pull water that evening. Tuesday... fly birds. If they were in fair condition this would more than likely cause them to fly fast and maybe sky out for a few minutes. However because you fed them so little and they're not in condition they would not fly long. So an overfly would not be a problem. Also since your birds are not in condition they may circle for a while fast on the wing and trap right away. If they do, here’s what you do. Feed them 12% grain mix when they trap. Feed 14 tablespoons for 20 birds. Wednesday... Don't fly but feed 20 birds 8 tablespoons of Austrian or Canadian peas (if you have them) Once they've finished the peas feed them 5 Tablespoons of the 12% grain. Pull the water that evening. Thursday... Fly the birds. They should be active today. They will be light, hungry and resisting the roll less, they should not fly too high but will probably only fly 20 minutes or a little less which is fine if they're active. Flight time can always be increased if you want them on the wing longer. However if they do fly longer that’s okay. We're looking for activity right now. When they trap feed them 17 tablespoons of grain for 20 birds. Hold water that evening. Friday... Fly them. They should be busy today especially if they didn't do much Thursday. This is just a program to get them going again. Once we see if this works for your guys we'll go from there. Good Luck!! The yoyo effect and protein boost with the feed should sort of shock them in to a change. You're holding the water so they don't fill up on it before you fly them. They drink when they trap for now. There are a trillion feed methods to get them going again that different guys use. I know this one has worked for me and others I've shared it with. I've done many others but lets try this for now. Remember every family of birds is different so this may work great for your birds and not a friends or vise versa. Follow this to the letter and let me know what happens. Also... When was the last time these guys were wormed? See you in the roll Big Al

With my birds, if i give them that kind of feed, (14 or 15 tblspoon of feed for 20 birds) they will be crashing. That if they want to get off the ground. You want your birds active, just mix some oily seed with the feed. Canary seed will work best. Feed your 20 birds 20 tblspoon full and three spoon full of canary seed for four or five days in a row and watch the activity. I usually mix some of off the shelf wild mix bird seeds that have unsheled and cruunshed sunflower seeds along with other oily seeds. They help speed up the molt and also add alot of activity and excitement to them. But be carefull, too much of it and you will have your birds rolling down. So use it sparinglly as needed. Thanks.
