Hey guys,
Just curious...
Do you spray your birds or dip them for external parasites
and what do you use? I've done both in the past and found them to work about the same.

Al, I put Permectrin II in the bath water, along with Ivomectrin. I allow the birds to bath about once a week. Kit birds get to bath about twice a month, but more lately with the heat and all. This keeps most of the feather pests at bay. I keep a can of Purge III on the shelf for when I am handling a bird, and see a lice or two, I just spray them with with it in both wings and tail and a dab on the back of the neck.

I sprayed, but the bath sounds much better.

What I use is Sevin dust in a nylon stocking hung where they are always bumping it when they fly in the Loft.I also use it to dust around the nest boxes.
I bath twice a week in Summer and once a week in Winter if weather permits.I use Borax in the Bath water.I probably use more Borax than I need to but I like them to get enough on them.I use a cup to 1-1/2 gal. of water.
I have heard of the Permectin that Brian uses and want to give this a try also.
Brian did I understand you use Ivermectin in the bath water too? How much do you use?I use it to worm using 2 or 3 drops on the tongue but never heard about putting it in the bath. David

David, Ivomectrin is a pesticide like Permectrin and kind of does the same thing, but also worms the birds in the process. Just about every bird I see take a bath drinks from the bath water too. I usually add about a cap full to the bath pan along with about a half a cap full of Permectrin.

Brian,

How much Ivomec do you use in the bath water? I have the injectable type and a capful would cost 25.00 per bath. Each cap is about 1.5 tablespoons, about half the bottle. The bottle only has 50 MLs and cost 50.00. Maybe you have a different kind? I see they also sell the drench.

Yah Alan, the kind I use is the Sheep Drench kind that they sell at Jedds. Its about 15 bucks for a approx. 12 oz bottle. I use about a cap full or less per every other bathing.

Hey Dave,
I like the idea of sevin in the stockings.. I have been using Bronco equine fly spray. I spray the boxes and perches.. I put about 10 sprays in my bath water and it seams to work pretty well..
I also use roach chalk if I think I have a problem. That stuff really works well also.. Thanks for the idea.. Mongrel Lofts

For reasons unknown I have no problems with any infestation to include flys. I live in northern California were it is very dry (and hot) in the summer and cold and wet in the winter ( the guys back east will laugh, but it gets in the low fortys often in the winter).

What I do is spray Black Flag flying insect spray on the ground outside the loft. The key word is "outside". I don't let it get airborn (or as little as possible). I learned the outside thing from my pest control guy who does my house. His spraying the outside of my home has cause all the pests to leave the inside of my house.

Just a thought.

PS - do not let the pest control guy spray in or around your loft...........you have to personally control it. Spray should be point directly at the ground from about 1 to 2 inches and not on or in the loft.

I also use tobacco stems for nesting material and a product called Muck Breaker which is small chunks of ceder wood about the size of the end of your thumb or a little smaller. This very absorbent and helps ward of some paracites and flys.

Keep the droppings cleaned up and fresh drinking water everyday.

I think I have been lucky thus far...............and I also work at it.

Just my fifty cent worth.

Kenny.I have to give Eric Stephens credit for the Sevin in panty hose.He give it to me.LOL.
I have really been impressed with it since using it.
I like Brian's idea of putting Ivomectrin in the bath water. It would help control worms at the same time.I have never got the drench type before.
I never heard of what you use in my area.
How are your birds doing? Are you going to be ready for the Fall Fly? Always a lot of questions.LOL.
My region is not going to fly again this year.We only came up with 7 kits.We were suppose to fly the last of Aug.I think if it would have been later we would have come up with the extra 3 needed to qualify.
Anyway I had a lot of fun getting my kit ready and feel I learned a lot in the process. Take Care,David

The sevin in the stocking works to an extent. The problem I ran into was the chicks were bringing it from the nest to the y/b box. By the time I was aware of the problem I had them in all three boxes. I picked up some permectin and plan on a session this afternoon. Just a bit of dusting between rounds would have eliminated the "few" I have now. Not all of the birds have them and it is a minor infestation.

Look closely at the red marked birds. I thought the lice were bits of color in the feather for a week. Then I saw one move. "Color isn`t suppsed to move."I thought. I dug into the feather and there he was.

I dusted that bird, then all of the others, then dusted the y/b box. It killed most of them,I have a few hangers on so I will treat them with the permectin in the bath water.

BTW I got the sevin /stocking from a Mees post

David, Doesn't the Sevin "dust aerosol" get into the drinking water and feed? (I tend to keep more grain in the breeder feeders) How much Permectrin II are you putting in the bath water, Brian? Cliff

Less than a cap full (using the cap on the bottle) for a standard metal bath pan. If you use too much the birds come out looking like they were salvaged from an oil slick, but they won't have any kind of bug on them for months and months..lol.

Al,I haven't had much luck with dust,we get pigeon flys out here, they seem to laugh off the dust.Permectrin is all I use, a half cap goes a long way and the mess is minimal,I breath enough dust at work[LOL].ALOHA,Todd

Cliff.I am sure that some of it probably gets in the feed but the amount that would must not hurt them.I have a sprinkle can that I dust all the nest boxes and perches with untill you can see it laying all around.I have used it for 3 years with no effect as of yet.
I have never used what Brian uses but it is on my next to do list.Seems like a lot less bother and would do a better job.As someone else said their is enough dust already.David

I dip my birds. 3 tsp of pyrthin or maithion(not both only one) into 3 gallon of water. Mix until cloudy then dip birds, body not head. Use Q-tips in ears to kill lice. Then I throww remaining dip across on concert floor of loft and broom it around and let dry. It is a good clean kill.

Upcd,I dip as well,I used to dip a flight feather in malithion and brush it under the birds wing, rump and neck, just couldn't stand the smell of the malithion,if a questionable bird is not going in the permectrin bath, they get dipped.Aloha,Todd

Came across a problem. It got so hot out here had to bath the birds. 111. Now in a week I have to redip because the birds washed the dip off. And I saw a fly run across a bird or two. Bumber, I got redip 70 birds again. This hot weather isn't helpful in my case. When it is that hot I feel horrible not letting them cool down.

That kind of heat is not good for man or beast. I don't put them up when it gets that hot and the bath pan comes out. Heat really breaks them down and they are molting as well. I increase the the protien and fat in thier feed as well during molt along with a shot of vitimins and minerals in thier drinking water.

UPCD,
Put a little dish soap in with the dip and it will stick to the birds feathers a little better. At the same time you dip you might also want to put some Ivermectin in the drinking water. It gets into the birds blood stream and will kill any pigeon flies that bite the birds.
