When handling our birds, notice that some have tails that flex up, some flex down, and some do nothing at all.
Which type of tail do your best rollers have? Which type do your average and worse rollers have? Does it matter?
Thanks Russ

Hi Russ
I checked the tails on some of the better spinners i have and found that some flex up some down and some sideways so i dont know how to tell if a bird is better or not becuase of tail flex I once heard a guy whith years of expierance say that a tail that flex's up and strait is better than the rest but I diddnt ask why.
Thanks George

I have heard that if the tail has a good down flex it is a good sign of strong back muscle.David

I have been saving this for a slow day so here it is. Over the summer I have been analyzing the tail flex on my birds. I have found that the more flex a bird has in the tail the tighter he can ball up. Simple aerodynamics. Another thing I have noticed is that when a bird has a side flex he will usually plate out of a roll. Only the birds with a straight up and down motion with the tail will rotate out of the roll cleanly. I seems to me that it would be impossible for a crooked tail bird to come out clean. Once again, simple aerodynamics. I hold my bird then rock my hand back and forth to make the tail come up. I watch how the tail moves. The amount of flex and fan and recoil will determine how he rolls to an extent. One other point to remember. Rollers have 11 tail feathers and tumblers have 11-14.

I have seen Ortal. roller flex up.As do some of the brm. rollers. My better rollers have up flex. Thanks for the count of tail feathers on the tumlbers. Because I was tripping out thinking these birds had to many tail feathers.

Is this an old mother goose story about the tail. I had heard of it before ...but never really tried it. I took some of my best rollers and there tails did different things...so I do not believe this...but who knows. To me...what does it matter about the tail.....the easiest way to tell if a bird rolls is to look up when they are flying...if they roll good...then...they are a good roller...LOL!...Just messing around....

I like to see good a good up flex on my birds! Does anybody else believe that good tail flex has affect on the roll? ---------- Val

Absolutely, I see it in my best birds, Eldon Cheney told me at the World Cup fly that this is a trait that he has noticed in the best roller lofts around the world. Needless to say, I was pleased that he saw this trait in Ruby Rollers.
Others have said it makes no difference but my fastest and tightest rollers show the trait. So I guess I should not believe my lying eyes. LOL ---------- FLY ON! Tony Chavarria

Fellas I agree on this one! My best birds hold their tail up or down!

Hi everyone !
I am surprised none of you oldtimers brought up that the tailflex was/is a fairly accurate way of determining the sex of a mature bird, ...Tail up or to the side, is Hen. ...Tail down, a Cock !

Buck did you say tail up is a hen..and here i am thinking its a strong back,,lol,, anyway i like to mention in two of my DH birds that were 2 roll downs i would always pick them up and rock them with both my hands wrap around them and the bird facing me what i notice was the tail stay down no flex like it was broken no muscle to help it flex at all..I knew right there it didn't have a strong back. but not that it was a sign i use to tell if it was a roll down before flying it but after seen it roll down a couple of times i try the tail flex thing..---------- Ralph....

Ralph, the ones I have with the extreme upward tail flex are from the same family as yours.

Several of my young birds have great upward tail flex! They are just coming in to the roll, so I am gonna pay close attention for awhile and do some comparison!
Tip from Mr. Cheney also! Great man!---------- Val

As a newbie to the roller Game I was told that the tail flex was to prove the sex of the bird. ---------- D.T.R.C

Well as usual, you guys are talking over my head. Does anyone have flex up and flex down looking photos so I know what the heck your talking about. Some of my birds drop there wings below their tails sort of like OR's is that what your talking about. They don't do it all the time just once in a while I'll see their wings hanging lower than the tail. Like this squeak in this photo.
