Hey George, Saturday is the last day for the NBRC auction. The auction closes midnight saturday night/sunday morning. And there is some very good birds being offered by some super guys. Between the auction and the raffle we are getting close to $5000.00. that is just the website raffle and auction. That isn't counting the convention part of it! To all the guys that donated items to the auction. I want to say thanks for helping out with the NBRC convention. To those who are bidding on some great items I also want to say thanks for your support. Just to let some know. Sometimes these guys that donate birds don't turn loose any. And this will be a perfect opportunity for someone who doesn't have the means to visit these lofts. So this would be perfect for the new guys to get some birds. Don't worry if your not a member of the NBRC. The auction is open to anyone who is interested in rollers. So come on guys and lets get busy and get ahold of some good birds!!!! Brian Middaugh

Brian, I just missed Joe Bob's birds in the WC auction by ten dollars because I didn't know that a proxy bid exceeded my bid by only $10. Is it kosher to ask of you what the highest current proxy bid is on the item so we can top it if we choose? I suppose the problem will be the pace of action as the auction draws to a close, making it difficult for you to respond. Just curious. YITS Cliff

Hey Cliff, That is why Wendell and I tell everyone to place there bid before hand. Don't wait until the last minute because you could loose out. A proxy bid is a bid that dosen't exist until it is out bid.
All proxy's should be kept a secret and not made aware to others. Just as if you made a proxy no one would know it until they exceed your proxy. So to keep this from happening you make a proxy for yourself. And set the max as your top dollar offer. That way if you get out bid you won't let it bother ya.
As a rule I usually don't get to many phone calls for auction bids. Maybe one or two a year the last few hours. When they call and make a bid I would say your out bid. So they can make a new bid before they hang-up. Sometimes they make another bid. Alot of time they say thanks and hang-up. But the choice is theirs. My cell number that shows on the website also has call waiting. Where I can receive two calls at a time if I need it.
Usually when one sends in a proxy everyone one can tell because there name is always as top bidder and the dollar amount changes. And I have had a 1200.00 proxy bid on a pair of birds. They never got that high but it tells you how serious some of these people are.
Now you said you were beat out by $10.00. Well that might not have been the max on the proxy. It was the bid above yours and thats why it shows as $10.00 more.
I guess to answer you short and sweet!! Make a proxy and forget about it. Don't let it bother ya if you don't win because you set yourself a max and stuck to it. If you make a proxy your max is told by no one!! This makes it fair to everyone bidding.

If you don't know any of the donors, how does one know which birds to bid on? There's no info on them or their birds on the site.

Brian, Wendell e-mailed me after it closed that the proxy bid ceiling was $10 more than mine. So why is it cheating, birdman, to know what the highest bid is so you can decide whether to place another bid? Isn't that the point of an auction? It makes sense to post the proxy bids, too, doesn't it? I guess the secrecy makes it more like a silent auction. You can't really count on outbidding the standing bid. Just being devil's advocate here, and trying not to make the same mistake on the next auction. YITS Cliff

Alan, Usually the donors names speak for themselves. But for someone new to the hobby. Well I guess you can email them any questions you have. Like ask them how they did last year/prior years in any competitions, how they got the family they have. Really get to know the guy that you plan on getting some birds from. Let him know about yourself and get to know each other. Some call it butt kissing but I see it as being respectful. Let the donor know what your plans are for the birds. Ask others on here who they would get some birds from. Ask on other lists, message boards, chatrooms. The people who fly's rollers usually have a good idea what might work for you. If it is other ideas you have. Then ask ones within the group you talk or chat in. It's not to hard just take a little time and put in a little effort and you will get loads of information. If there is any way I could help just let me know.

Does the club only allow proven breeders of top notch birds to donate?

Alan, The birds are donated by a different breeders. What some calls great birds but others are called culls. It all depends on what is in the eyes of the beholder. But being the website director I believe if someone puts some birds up for auction. They will do there best and send some good birds. You see these birds are donated to cover the cost of the convention. The donor don't receive a dime so it's there name going out! So take if for what its worth. Do your homework and I don't think you could go wrong. Brian Middaugh
