I have a friend that has had lost over half his babies this spring from an ant problem. He breeds in individual cages like a rabbit hutch style set up. He also has chickens that feed on the bits of feed that go through the wire floor.
I to lost a pair of babies this year from this exact type of ant problem. Is there any thing friendly out there to kill them with out poisoning the chickens? Any ideas on what might help? Ronnie

I was a Pest Control Technician for 10 years. My advise would be to lock the chickens up for a while and treat the Fire Ant's mounds with Amdro. You can buy it at Home Depot. It's a bait. The ants carry it down to the queen and they all eat it and die. It only works on true Fire Ants, large black ants and the tiny red ants. It don't work on Harvester Ants and a few others. You can tell in a few minutes if it's going to work. Once you apply it to the mound, the workers will immediately start carrying it.
If your ants won't eat it, you'll have to treat the whole area with Diazanon Granules and spray. It doesn't work as well but will kill them. But they'll be back.

I remeber old rabbit breeder use to set the rabbit hutch type cages in a can of motor oil for each leg and the ant could cross. Not good for the chickens.

Thanks for all the helpful responces! My friend and myself have a lot of free ranging chickens. I was hoping to find a way to not lock them all up. Its looking like I may not have any choice in the matter. Al how do I get my hands on one of your Anteaters?? I would be willing to borrow or even purchase one from you...lol Ronnie

Hello Ronnie, why not place each leg of the pen in a coffee can or similiar container filled with water or appropriate liquid substance. Low cost and no poisons or need to lockup your chickens. ---------- FLY ON! Tony Chavarria
