Hi Guys

One off my stock cocks were up and running yesterday and today when I got to the loft he coudn't stand on his legs. He eats and drink normal. This in fact happened a year ago to the same cock, I gave him a multi vitamin and within two days he recovered. He is currently feeding youngsters so I am just afriad that if it's something contayges and he might carry it over to the youngsters. What can this be, any advice is appreciated.

Keep rolling

Do what you did last time to get him well. Did this happen around the same time last year? Do you seperate your birds for the fall and winter? If you worried this problem could be carried over don't breed this cock.

I had a cock with a similar problem at the start of the year. After feeding squeakers he would appear drunk, couldnt walk or fly for several minutes. After resting he was ok. I spoke to a vet one day and he was of the opinion the bird had damaged his spinal cord, a leasionor something. When feeding he was twisting his neck and almost paralising himself. He is fine other wise.??

Dehydration/exhaustion maybe?
Are you giving the breeders minerals with salt?

Hi Guys

Sorry for not responding promt,I went away for the weekend.
Birdman-I keep minerals and Grit in my stock lofts and this cock was resting for approximately three months before I paired him up.
UPCD-I gave him a multi vitamin the last time. No,this happened last year winter. Winter by us is breeding season so my birds normally breed during this time.
Motherloelofts-I will probebly have to try the Calcium first and if that does not help then I will have to take him to the vet as Ally Mac mentioned.
Thanks for the advice Guys

The main reason I mentioned Calcium is that you said the multi - Vit did the trick and what you decribed is what you can see in a hen with a Calium problem.

Good luck

Red Grit..............

Make sure your breeders have access to red grit. It has the calcium and other minerals to help keep them healthy.

I also put some red grit on top of my kit boxes for my air birds.....just spread it loose on top.

Do you have any mice in your cage?
If so, you might have parytyphoid. If you do, get together with Jeds, foys, or equiv. right away.

Jef,like Scott said, leave it alone. If theres any unusual swelling you might need to give baytril for about 1 1/2 weeks,to reduce swelling.I will get a couple of breaks a year with my racing pigeons,it always seems to be the banded leg,I've had them break both legs. When the leg heals up,keep an eye on that bird there might be some issues there, hopefully not.Aloha,Todd

Hey,

Don't worry about the leg. I have a bird that is in my A team that got its leg caught in a rat trap...and really tore it up. The leg basically just died from below the top of the band. Basically...the leg was worn to the bone..where it was caught in the trap...and since the rest of the leg and foot could not get blood...it just died. It was starting to roll pretty good before it happened. I was going to pull its head off because I thought it was suffering....well...I kept him in the kit box..would feed him by himself...Iodine...Peroxide..neosporine....the works and gave the bird an antibiotic during the healing process...the foot and leg basically just dried up...it looks like a foot raisin...but he is back to his old form...made the A team and is doing damn good......one of my best birds.....he uses the raisin as a club...when he walks....but is fine....I guess if he was not starting to smoke it up...I would have culled him....but It all worked out...

rock and ROLL
