Hi Everyone

Big Al helped me out with an excellent feeding program. You don't fly competition every week ,so what would you all suggest I feed them in the off weeks.

Depends on your birds and the climate where you live. I feed mine wheat/peas/milo all of the time, with the exception being straight wheat the day before they fly. Kits hard into the roll don't get flown every day here. So I can bounce back and forth. Once a person gets past the wishing they would always fly the same every time out, the feeding process during maintenence flying gets a lot easier to cope with.

For my kit birds I use a 1 part pellet to 5 parts 50/50wheat and milo. That is what I pretty much feed all the time. During the molt I go heavier on the sauflower too. My older birds I usually do the yo yo system with the pellet mix on fly day and straight wheat and milo on the rest days. The young birds get the pellet mix until they really come into the roll hard or get to be about 6 months old...then I start playing with the wheat and milo. I may put my birds on wheat and milo for a long period if they feel fat to me...if they feel to lean I bump up the protein....it is all about feel...

I fly them everyday like I am expecting competition so I feed them the same. The only change is during molt and additional safflower is added for the increase fat and protien.

Riian,

How long are the flying and what are feeding and how often are you flying and give me the ages of the birds as well as how active they are.....are they still in the molt....where do you live...what is the climate like...try and give me as much info as possible...what strain of birds do you have too....There may be some other fanciers on this page that can help you....if you are flying the same strain as them. All the factors that I have mentioned above...will dictate fly time and being strong on the wing...so post the info and we will try and help you out.

I think the goal towards Off Season/winter time feeding would be some think with less fat contents. Since birds will spend very little on physical activities (no breeding, separated and additional no flying) only thing they need during that time is to maintain body temperature.

I fed mixture last year with lot of different grains in it. It had high fat (about 6%) contents which I will avoid this year. I might try pellets this year, the one available locally has about 2.5% fat contents and very good quality. Let see what they will do on pellets during off season. Since the fat contents are low I may end up feeding more when it gets extreme cold.

I was always told from an old bird buddy of mine to feed like 10% of corn. It helps them burn fat which produces heat while they shiver in the loft. I am from Indianapolis, IN so my winters can get pretty frigid for my birds. Its hard on them. I am sure some of you guys have worst winters than me. last year i fed like 20% of corn. I go to Sam's Club and get that popcorn in the i think 25 lbs bag. Pretty cheap, like 8 bucks !! Let me know what you guys think about that. I am not sure if i will do it this year.
