Todd, I don't look for an "ideal" as that word has many different descriptions. I look a good bird that rolls right, kits right and has good frequency. If it is really good it will be bred from. Then it has to prove it can produce. If it can do both of these, it is my "ideal" bird. If not, it is just another expendible troop.

It sure seems to me that the hens spin tighter and faster than the cocks do. Most cocks I have seen are a little slower. So a tight fast cock would, indeed, be an asset. YITS Cliff

The hens in my loft are the dominate force no matter if we are talking about performance or genetics. I try and find a cock bird that has closely inhereted it's mother's character and behavier...........that is my stock cock. The rest of them that have not inhereted thier mother's character and behavier are dead.
I have 56 birds and only 16 of them are cocks. Nine breeders and 7 kit birds (I think one of the cock kit birds is gay....LOL).

I think that it's common in most lofts to have more good performing hens than cocks. But sometimes the cocks are better producers. If you have a cock that is a good producer, try mating him to your best performing, best type hens and and then take the best performing best type young cocks from those matings and breed them back to their mothers. You should start noticing an increase in good cocks after a couple generations.
