If your birds got wiped out and you had to start with new birds which family would you start with? and why ? and which family would you not use and why ? ie, (unproven , infrequent ,high flyers , late devolpers, rolldowns, too hot,

And NO ! you could not get any of your old family from someone else .

George,
How this topic really hits home. I've been down in Gulfport Mississippi working. And I came home for a long weekend because of "RITA". You just can't imagine what everyone is going through down there.
But to get back your question. You have to do some homework. Think about what you want. If your going to fly competition or if your just going to fly in yourback yard. But which ever you choose you should start out with the best you can get. And improve from there. Since I have Ken Billings and Scott Campbell birds. I believe I would get incontact with those fellas. But if they couldn't help me out I think I would have to get in contact with a few others such as Jay Starley, Dave Szabatura, Jim Spring, Bobby Bradley, Ivan Hanchett just to mention a few there is so many out there that can get you back where you once was.
So now I can go out and enjoy the birds for a few hours tomorrow. Because come sunday I'm heading back to Gulfport and if "RITA" causes more problems I might be in Texas before long. But for right now its 3 months to one year in the Gulf.

Hi G.R.

That's a very interesting topic!!
I have a simple answer for you though...
During an individuals pigeon raising days, they establish personal preferences. These prefernces are in in flight patterns, depth, rolling style, speed, color, body type, character, flying height and a whole host of other things. The bottom line is that you find a breeder who breeds the birds that happen to fit the criteria you prefer. You have to love being in the yard enjoying them even when no one else is around.
(This is the most important thing) So get what you want!

There are some well known breeders who breed great birds but may not have a system that breeds the type of birds you like. Then on the other hand there may be a backyard breeder/flyer who breeds everything you desire in birds!
So again, ultimately the objective would be to find someone who breeds what you like regardless of who they are.
Hope this makes sense!!
See you in the roll....

If I was presented with that situation, I'd go scam a bunch of birds from Randy Gibson, including the ones of mine he still has breeding! LOL. Then I'd go over to my Buddy Van's house and get Black Elvis' brother and sister back, and then start all over again with blending these two families together.

George,
That's a tough one to answer. I think that any of the top CPRC lofts could provide the quality foundation birds. I like what I saw at Brian McCormick's house. Brian would be a good first choice.

By the way, Brian, did you pull that blue bird that was burning up the sky a couple weeks back?

Hey Russ, I don't let too many birds leave here so anyone in need of some CPRC birds can get out the large greenbacks and go up to Jerry's house! LOL.
Naw, I didn't pull it. It has to prove it has the stuff. Now there are like three of them in that kit doing it so I don't know if it is all three or still just the one...LOL. Bad thing is I lost a sweet one today. Black pepper head hen that had been () super fast for the last few weeks. Made a bad call coming out of the box after three days locked up, those rocks she hit weren't too forgiving.

Hey David,
I don't think a computer will do me any good down there LOL LOL. We are sleeping in a tent and sharing a bathroom with 75 other guys. How tempers run short when placed in those conditions. And there isn't any electric where we are set up at. So no air condition, fuel rations for your car. curfews keeps you from going any where unless you wanted to be harrassed by the military asking where your going and where you came from. Even with the Disaster relief badges it's still a pain. And when your working from 7am to 11:30pm and all the stores are open from 8am to 8pm it's hard to pick up any supplies. No cook stoves, refrigators, TV, computers. And all you have is past copies of the NBRC and a propane latern.
Hey Daivd congratulation on your win in the Fall Fly!!!! Region 1C. Best of luck in the finals!!!!!!!!
Hey Al, you wont believe the things that happen around down there. There is so much that the TV don't place on the air. Because they don't want to make it public and alarm everyone. But it is pretty scary and with the other hurricane coming I figure it would be a good time to leave.
Hey I wish you all the best of luck with the fall fly and hope to be back before to long.

George you said:And NO ! you could not get any of your old family from someone else

Man you know how to hurt.LOL.But since I have tried several other families of rollers I have come to the conclusion that there is good rollers in every family.Every family I have tried has strong points and weak points.Knowing what I know about the families I have tried and I had to start from scratch and there wasn't any of my family to be had I would probably go with the Jaconette based rollers. As for a name of someone: I would probably start with Danny Horner.Never had any of his birds but have heard a lot of good about him.Now this is just for the sake of the way you put your question.LOL

On the other hand if something happened to my Lofts and I had to start from scratch and James Turner couldn't help me out I would go to Bob Mcguan,Tony Roberts,Jay Yandle,Dom Cirri just to name a few.David

Brian,
Bummer about the hen. I would like to see that 'A' kit again after they are fully mature.

George, let's turn the tables a bit. Who would you go to if you had to start over?

Russ I guess It's my turn on the hot seat,i have flown several families and have learned that the Parker ,Higgins ,and Duncan ,lines are the best for me and running a close Second is the Horners any of these familys would Put me in a good spot to enjoy some roll and have a shot in a few flys.

The birds fly at a hight that I enjoy (not to high) and start spinning at a early age and you dont have to starve to get the spin out of them,

Also the birds are consistent and they seem to hold up to a novice's fly program (like mines).

P.S. These Birds are like a loaded pistol they go off in anybodys hand !! also they have a proven record in MAJOR FLYS just ask any member of the C.P.R.C.

JUST FLY,FEED,and WATER !!!!

I'd go back to Keith Londons house and get them as well as Johnny and Jerry. Top breeders breed top breeders!

WEll I would'nt be desparate just to get any birds.I would look for the right ***Dummy line of birds,*** ***Mount Airy Lofts (Thor)***I liked his reds type on his pics and the eyes on his birds- -***Dennis Goodair Line,*** the birds line that I used,- - ***Laron's I would check out***...... I would check out Donnie Norwood to see what he had.... I would make sure to test these all out of quality and percentage(air and breeding).. One thing for sure is this VELOSITY and STYLE is my main focus. The old timers in the day focused on that so I will live in it still and be a HARD DIE about it.

To think about it. I would go around to as many lofts as I can. Find the birds that I'm looking for and buy them as well as the parents. Start my line from these birds. Which would probably still be London/Higgins/J Smith...Love they way these birds work and yes SPIN!
