I am just starting up Rollers and have a question. I have been breeding in individual breeding pens and have Ash Red check cock and a Ash Red bar hen. I believe they are a brother and sister mating. I have had bad luck this year with raising babies from this pair. The first nest I raised a single baby Red bar. The second nest a single baby a Blue Check self. Going by a real nice color chart on the slobber knocker site it says two ash reds "all offspring" will be Ash Red. Can I get some input on this please? I am kinda confused as to what is going on with this. Thanks Ronnie

The cock (father) carries blue. Cocks possess two genes for color. And, because both parents were ash red, the blue offspring will be a hen. One of the original cock's parents was a blue. If the cock's father was a blue and the mother ash red, the red bar would not be it's full sister as all hens from that mating would be blue. If the father was an ash red and mother a blue, the red bar could be its full sister as all offspring from that mating would be ash red, assuming of course the grandfather didn't carry blue as well. Thanks Brian. You hit the genetic nail right on the head! I dug through my paper work and sure enough, these two are brother and sister. I pretty much knew that already but I discovered that the parents to these breeders/siblings are a Red check cock and a Blue Bar hen! Thus the Red check father is split to blue from his mother. I was thinking though that because he was split and he is ash red mated to ash red that even being split wouldn't matter and all would come ash red. I guess I proved that theory wrong huh...lol Today has been a day of learning. Thanks again Brian. Ronnie

My worse pairings were sister - brother. I no longer pair brother and sister. My best results have always came from Daughter - Father.

A Question, Did you give pre breeding meds? Also sometimes the birds are to closely related and bad things happen.
