Are these birds usually not a problem with pigeons? This is what I have the most of around my home. Obviously Cooper Hawks, which seem to inhabit most of California are a huge problem. What other types of hawks have you roller guys consistently had problems with. For information on all types of hawks, I would recommend the following site:

http://www.mbr-pwrc.usgs.gov/id/framlst/infocenter.html

Click on "Kites & Hawks" and it gives you all kinds of information on hawks as well as pictures of young and mature birds in case you're having trouble identifying them.

In California there are several.
To name a couple...
Falcon, Falcon hybrids, Coopers and some guys do have problems with Red Tails although they are not typically a bird hawk! Most buzzards usually are not. Some R.T's can become avid roller hunters though. ----------

Here in MI we have Coopers mainly. Yet I would imagine if you had any local Goshawks they would definatly cause trouble. You can tell the two adults apart, as the Coopers will be more of a brown color, while the Gos (the North American) will have a dark grey back, with a black hood. It will also have a more rounded tail than the Coops.

Big Al, are you still flying any birds?

Thanks,
Caleb

A pair of redtails built a nest in the back corner of my property. As soon as they appeared, the Coopers hawks left. The redtails only made one pass at a kit of young birds on their second or third time flying. Birds in every direction and this redtail makes a pass at them. She landed on the ground between my two lofts. Saw me sitting there and got an Oh S__t look on her face. I hit the air horn-she crashed into my loft and left. They never made another pass at my pigeons. Now that they have left, the Coopers are back. Sure hope they nest here next year again.

Last year I had a couple issues with Cooper hawks only. I do have red tails that nest every year in a big oak tree behind my house. The red tails keep the coopers at bay. Never had one problem with the red tails. The Red tails usually stay until about Novemeber-December...and I kid you not...about a day after they leave...here come the coopers. Anyway..I enjoy the red tails. They raise youngsters every year...when my neck starts hurting from looking up at my kit...I will take the binocs and look at the red tails

Hi Caleb,

I only fly rollers now. I flew Red Tails and Harris Hawks and an ocassional Goshawk with other Falconers. We usually trapped and manned (Tamed) the birds. We were all licensed Falconers. I haven't flown in some years, maybe ten or so, but I still love watching the Red Tails. They don't bother me here.
The rollers are very young (5 - 7 months) but doing fine right now.

Coopers and occasional Sharp here in Pa. The redtails are plentiful bit seldom bother the rollers.Have only lost one to a redtail that I know of.Swooped it from the kit like an Eagle.LOL.The Redtails are sure hard on my Banties running around tho.I think they are more into ground hunting rather than air.The Coops are daily now but seemed to have slowed down some.Maybe they are hitting the doves more. Hi Al,

Hey that is great about the rollers! I am on the road to become a Falconer myself, but I have found it a challenge so far! lol! I did pass the test, but finding a sponsor is a real chore.

David, that must be hard flying, if you are getting hit regularly. I flew today with no problems, but I am surprised usally by this time of year I am getting hit pretty regularly.

Hi Bluesman,
Do you have a site where I can see your Banties?
I saw some for the first time in San Diego Last year and was in awe at the beauty!!! Man!!

Hey Caleb,
Finding a sponsor is hard!! It's a very tight knit group and they want to really screen new comers! Once you're in you're in! I'm no longer in contact with any of the guys or I could help you. I'd also have to renew if I was going to fly again.
I'll have Richard A. get a hold of Happy Hilton and see if he's in contact with anyone these days. He wasn't flying the last time I saw and spoke with him but he may have contacts for you.----------
See you in the roll!

Big Al.No I don,t have a site.I don,t even have a pic of them. They are all just barnyard fancy's.LOL. Just a bunch of mixed breeds that free range and roost in trees.Seldom does a hawk get in without me knowing about it from them when I am out. They are squaking from one end of the place to the other.LOL. David
