I know that some have talked about canary seed...and how it stimulates rollers and makes them a little more active. Can anybody tell me...how much to start with for 20 birds and when do I give it to them. Mix it in during regular feeding? Before I Fly? How long before? Just a litte help or a couple of opinions. I just wanted to try it and see how my birds react.

Paul, a few years ago when John Weins was here judging, we were sitting around and started picking his brain. He eluded to several things he does to set up his birds, and much of it he said was derived from what he learned from Monty. One of the things he said he did was to give the birds three tablespoons of millet exactly three hours before they are flown. This of course, is based upon him feeding the yo-yo system where the birds would be quite hungry. His response was that the millet took the edge off of their hunger as well as it being an oil seed, gave them some sort of mild stimulant.

So is canary seed the same as millet as far as being used the same way. I fly the Yo Yo system with my birds. Fly one rest two...reducing the feed each rest day and then starting over. So three hours before...I am going to try it and see what happens.

Paul,

We had this topic before and discussed in length. Three hours before you fly your Kit (20 birds), give them three tblspoons of canary seeds. They will kit tight and perform to their max. Take a look at AD3 site (rollerdigest.com), the discussion was there. You can get it from Wal-mart for the wild bird feed. Best of luck.
