Has anyone heard of any cases of BIRD FLU that involved pigeons or pigeon breeders?

Is there dangers in our hobby?

Is there anything we can do to avoid if it is a danger in our hobby?

Has anyone heard how BIRD FLU is transmitted?

Apparently the first bird flu cases were reported in Eastern Europe this week, chickens I think. It seems to be getting closer to us in the UK!!

Ya know,
One thing I was thinking about the flu.We don`t have our birds exposed to other lofts on a regular basis such as the racers and show birds. Our exposure is limited to new birds. This could be a distinct adavantage.

They say pigeons aren't tarnsmittior, but can be carriers. Say a feral bird enters a infected chicken yard and the visits your place and there you go.

I just reads the results from two seperate studies. Both report that pigeons are not affected by the flu. They are not carriers. The mechanical means of contagion is usually limited to wild birds moving from place to place.
The only negative impact I could see is the possibility of pigeons being improperly grouped with poultry and being quarantined or possibly denumerated(culled). This seems to be the chief concern of most fanciers.

What was stated in the report I read was if a pigeon land in an infected chicken yard and his little feet touch and infected fecal matter, then he goes in someones loft or walks on thier roof with these dirty little feet. We are going to have some problems.

And if a pig had wings.....
I really don`t think MY birds are landing in a chicken yard. I have very little contact with wild birds mainly sparrows. I am working to limit that to zero.
The point I am making is pigeons do not get sick from AI. If we work a little on our operations we will not be transmitters/carriers either.

Folks, its a proven fact that pigeon diseases can be transmitted through the air, mosquitoesand bugs aside.Master pigeon breeder Paul Gamino has provided some good articles in our Pacific Parlor Roller Club bulletins, does it apply to this avian flu,I don't know, one thing I do know is our little Island of O'ahu is on it 24/7.Aloha,Todd
