Ability,Bodytype,Temperment,Quality. Can a Champion Cock bird help determin the best hens?I have a champion cock that will tell me if a hen is worth the space that she occupise. He deosen't wan't anything to do with anything less than the best.He will drive only Hot hens that are most awsome performers.Ofcourse this cock knows who he is and what he likes. He is paired to my best hen.I'll drop him into a group of hens and he always drives the best performing hen I Have to agree with him every time.-Scotty

Hello Scotty, maybe this cock bird is Bill Pensom re-incarnated, he could pick the good’uns from the ground too?? LOL

To comment in all seriousness, this is very interesting. Have this cock bird’s cock offspring been able to do it too? Does it pick out its own progeny hens as being the best? Do you let it help you pick your best hens? Can it do this with other roller family’s also? This sounds really incredible to me. Has anyone else had a cock do this in their loft?

Hellow Tony,I can siriously answer your questions. As far as if this cock can pick out the most awsome hen from another family.Yes definently. Do I let him pick the best hen for me.no,that is silly.I know the hens individual abilities already,He confirms my decision after me.I have not noticed this ability from any of his offspring,or any of my many other cockbirds, nor have had any cockbird in the 15 years that I have been raising pigeons with this ability. All other cock's in my experiances will take a hen that is willing. Why this one cock dropped in a large group of horny hens, only want's the hen that is supirior is beond me. Especialy with Rollers, as I have been told, and do.I take notes on the behavior of individuals as a bird matures for obviouse reasons. This cock also rolls as perfect as any Roller that I have ever seen.My guess is it takes one to know one. I'm not trying to bragg about this bird, just trying to understand if this is even possable?I will do some more experamenting to try to figure this one out myself. Most people would call me a bird brain, and think I'm crazy Thats ok.If I heard about this from someone els I too would be sceptical.-Mike

Mike,
That is news to me. If I would let mine foundation cock pick all his hens - no matter if they were my best hens, he would mount all of them. grin
That reminds me of something I hear now and then. These guys would let their birds pick their own mates. That is like saying, let us let mother nature do all our pairings. They probably never got over the fact that if we let mother nature do all our selecting, we would have a brunch of commies stiffs. Remember we are selective breeding for certain characteristics - deep, stable, frequent rolling that breeds true.
I have a sort of different story. My buddy has this hen that breeds some pretty good birds with a darn good cock. He had tried pairing her up with different mates but she will have no part with these other cock birds. He then let her pick her own mate and she went and picked the wildest cock bird in the group. She is some what on the wild side as well. I tried pairing this hen up with my best cock and she didn't want anything to do with him either. She's back on her old mate which are a darn good producing pair in the first place. Funny how she would go for the cull if we let her pick her own mate. She is a picky hen but for what ever reasons, she takes to her original mate which she has been paired up for 3 years now.

THOR,I breed in all individual breeding stalls and don't like open breeding.I can't see making progress with a Roller line unless I do the choosing. It seems some of my nicer hens just seem to like this perticular cock.So I realisticly can't say this cock knows how to pick a champion hen.He is a bit of a show off and some of my nicer hens just seem to like him.Since this cock has proven himself in the air,I may use him on differen't hens to try and find that special click.I belive he needs to be with a hen for a whole season before I would switch him up,so I can see a group of the offspring to get an idea of a percentage of a group of performers.I guess I am just getting a little excited that I am makeing good progress with my rollers.I shoulden't jump to speclitive conclusions, and I need to keep it a little more sientific.I retested this cock and he seems to take any willing hen.Sometimes the hens are are just picky sometimes.Thank's for your input.I don't want to get to psycalogical about the whole thing with these Rollers, though I find this breed of pigeon to be most facinating.-Mike

The birds are doing better. Kitting better than they have ever done. They are not as active as I want (whose are?).

I took a little tort cock in the raffle that was David Werstler's. He flew like a champion. I have him in my breeder loft now. I have him paired with a red spangle hen that was solid performer (a Stephens/Norwood cross). I will set them on wooden eggs until about December.

Talk to ya later
