I just built a new loft and want ideas for the best way to place my trap to collect my birds. I have heard of hawks going right through the bobs and into others lofts and killing their birds. I don't want this to be a problem for me.

Should I collect my birds through the bobs and into an avery first and them let them into the loft second, or where they go from the avery and then through the bobs into the loft?

I had rollers over 45 years ago before there were so many hawks around.. Now the hawks are a problem for sure. It is such a shame that someone can lose a bird that took several generations of breeding to produce.

Thanks,
Mike N.

Mike, It Seems to me no matter were you put it. The best is to have a hinged door over it you can close it up . fly your birds a little hungry so they trap fairly quick, I stay out with mine till they have all trapped. And lock the door. That is if you have the time. Some with more experience mighht be able to tell you someting better. Tapp

Mike Tapp is right , the door for my trap folds down and is used for the landing board ,then flips up to close off the trap ,always keep in mind that many many kits of birds have been slaughtered by critters gaining entry through traps, I learned my lesson as a kid and is one that I have never forgot.

Mike,

Many of the roller guys in the Rocky Mnt RC use 4-inch roof jacks or vent flashing for their traps. There is a nice picture and description on the RMRC Getting Started Page: http://pages.zdnet.com/rrollerdude/rockymountainrollerclub/id3.html. I talked to one club member, and he insists that predators (including hawks, racoons, cats) can't get through these traps.

I am considering switching from bobs to this type of trap, but I'm not sure how quickly my birds will make the transition. Sometimes I have to leave for work before my birds are down, so I leave the trap open and just cross my fingers that there are no unwanted guests in the kitbox when I return in the evening.

I use the flashing on one of my boxes.

They are available at Home Depot for about 4 bux.Point it down and cut the hole out to 3 1/2 inches. I had a cat get in my kit box but not this y/b box. I have seen him on top of the loft before, I will get him. :( The birds tried to get back thru it but can`t lean into it with their wings spread. They just hold onto the rim with their feet and flap. I have a folding landing board for absolute security.
