I recieved two pair of Pensom birds from a man that I flew Homers with here in Idaho. His strain of Pensom Rollers came from a Lawyer friend here in Idaho who recieved these birds directly from the late Bill Pensom. He has kept these birds true and has not crossed anything into them over the years. He is a highly respected club member and I do not doubt his sincerity.
I mated both pairs and produced 12 youngsters. One hen and one cock are tiger grizzles, much like the fireballs that Tony owns. And the other black selfs with the hen carrying some sort of bronzing, perhaps carrying recessive red. They are beautiful birds but all of the babies seemed to be very slow to roll. Mostly just little flips and tail dragging.Wouldn't they be rolling by now if they were hatched in June and July? They roll but not very impressive.
If I were to pick the best of each pair and mate together would these birds youngsters increase in depth in velocity in each progressive generation? I had some roller once and they were screamers and I didn't even know what I had.
Sincerely, Bob

Bob, I have read some where probably in the book 'Birmingham Rollers' by Pensom that his birds develop and start showing work when they are 9 months old. I guess you need to wait if they are hatched in June/July. Pensom stain also consider as late developer. There are rollers stains which start rolling when they are 4 months old like Jacs. I had Sammy William's family of rollers few years back and they get into spin when they are only 3 months old. Just my 2 cents.

Bob those birds are still a bit young to show the goods if it's a good stable family. My youngest youngster kit is about that age and I have one or two starting to come in. My better birds come in at between 6-8 month's some a tad earlier and some a tad later , if my birds come in too early they will all most to the letter fall apart on me later (12 mo. plus) Also I find that my late hatches tend to come in a tad later due to the heat of Summer.

Hi Bob, I think the man you are talking about here in Idaho is Jim Gilesspe,,SP.. He had telstar from Pensom and many of the guys around here in Idaho bred birds down from Jim for years.. They do tend to come later to the roll and be a bit stiff compared to some families. I would give the young 1 year, anything not droping hard and fast by that time, should move on down the road. In my opinion. The birds today are just to good to wait years for them to come to the roll. One other thing Bob, Pensom's birds were not all late developers. I fly birds that are based around his birds and they come from 3 to 8 months. If you don't want your birds to come in late, don't stock birds that come to the roll late. Keep track when the young come to a good spin and only stock the ones that come to a solid roll early.. Mongrel lofts
PS, Bob, what part of Idaho are you in? Have you ever flown with the IRC. (Idaho Roller Club)

That is correct if he is a lawyer. I will watch and see if they improve by next May. I live in Caldwell and have for the past 8 years. I have met a few of the roller guys in my area. Beaver Dayton being one of them. He has some fine rollers. And no I have never been a member of the club only the Racing Pigeons and I am not currently active due to my family obligations. I have 5 children and they keep me hopping! :) Who might you be?
