Okay fellas its that time of yr again. LOL My question is about feeding during lockdown.. Do I just keep them on their present(14% pigeon mix)?? And stop giving them the added Milo and Wheat mix?? And then continue the Milo & Wheat mix along with their 14% mix when I start back flying them again... I know someone has the right answer for me. HELP.......

Paul

Hey Paul,

I would keep them on the 14% mix, if you live in a cold area (Where it gets 20 to 30 degrees during fall/winter) then I would add some whole corn to the diet. This just helps them put on a little weight for the cold weather. Just my .02

I am in California and when my birds are locked down I drop them down to 11%. When breeding they get 17%.

Paul,

Rich feed will keep them in a breeding condition. Wheat and Milo with occasional mix of good pigeon mix will do just fine. Do not over feed them thinking that because the winter is approaching they need the extra feed. Rather, in the cold days or nights, just add about 10% corn to their feed and they will do great.

Paul,
If your birds are like mine, they are still in the body molt or just finishing up. I locked my A team down right after the fly. They are on 14% with safflower and sunflower seeds. I did separate the cocks and hens. I will feed them whatever I'm feeding my stock birds who are also separated at this time until a week before I'm going to start flying them again in the spring for WC. At that time I will go to straight wheat. Get some fat off and get their attention. Has worked well for me in the past. Good Luck Paul. Mongrel Lofts

I heard crack corn is no good for rollers. How many use crack corn during winter. May be whole corn is good to go with. Just wondering.

I always heard whole corn is better to use. Maybe because the cracked corn can absorb more moisture and go bad during storage? Whole corn stays drier because the kernels are still sealed up.
