Do any of you guys fly Jacs? Do you know there history? How about feed requirements. I"m a newbe at this and have raised a little over sixty birds so far. Some are rolling well and some still flipin over. I've played with the feed, wheat, milo thing to stimulate action but still looking for the sweet spot. Thanks Ken..

Ken, I have a few families that go back to Richard Jaconette's birds in a long, round about way and I can tell you that there are differences in handling. Most guys who got birds from Richard built a family and from those selection were traits that flyer wanted in his birds. Thus, the feeding requirements now vary from family to family that have RJ band series way back on the peds. My Horner and Westfall birds are what some would call "pure" Jacs and they manage just about like any other families. My Reed birds a Jacs too, but because of the way that family was developed later on, they require a slightly different feeding tactic. My best recommendation would be to consult the person you got the birds from and find out what kind of feed management they practice with those particular birds.
Brian.

Thanks Brain for the info. I know what the other breeder feeds his birds, 1\3 Milo - 2\3wheat. I've found that a lot of you guys on this site know a lot about Rollers and I'm looking for others input. The internet is a good way for me to connect with other Roller fanciers too. I've mixed some red pigeon grit with granite grit and then mixed it with the wheat Milo feed mixture. I may be over doing it with the grit stuff. I'll use up what I got and go straight wheat Milo. Thanks again... Ken

Ken they need fat and protien at various intervals also , Winter, moult and youngsters is a whole different ball game also , a constant ration of Wheat or Wheat/Milo won't cut it.
I use a whole lot of Wheat and Milo but it is not for extended periods of time and during the moult and Winter it is rare that I will use it straight and if I do it is for a very short period and for a purpose.
grit them seperatly from the feed.
Always handle your birds and the body wt and reaction of the birds will tell you what you need to do.
Once it starts cooling down they will drop wt. fast as they just plain need more and they need it richer as far as protien and fat.

Ken, you may want to visit the website below. It has information on Jacs.

http://rpslofts.tripod.com/

I fly Jacs. The birds I have came from Bobby Bradley of TN. They are not 'Pure' Jacs. Bobby stock came from Ellis McDonald of AL. Ellis has Jacs for 25+ years and had outcorssed few times(hens being added from other family of rollers).

I personally like the family, they naturally fly slow and have high frequency(roll often). The roll quality is just fine and velocity is ok (what I have seen so far). My family of Jacs. need more protein in diet and fed up good to make them rolling and flying.

Hope that helps.

Hey Ken,
Look at my post on the feed question thread. That is how I do it and it works well for me. I did add some new stuff though. I bought a jar of rooster booster multi wormer medicated feed concentrate. Takes care of 3 worms, has a bit of bacitracin. It has a boatload of b vites, and electrolytes. Smells like shit, must be good, mamma always said. My birds will be wired backwards and beating the door down by Wednesday. Gonna be interesting to see what happens.

Thanks again guys for the help. One reason I got into rollers is because of the kind of people raising them... Ken
