When this fly was happening, who sponsored it?
What actually happened to stop it?
Has anyone heard anything at all regarding bringing it back?

Brian Mccormick I need to ask you something off line.

Unless someone can correct me, I believe Kevin McRae or John Vandenbroek started it. I'll ask John tomorrow.
The "sponsor" if you will was basically the individual who volunteered to be the "host" and accept the entries and do the flying for the span of time involved. Basically that person was the manager and coordinated the whole thing.
Tim Decker was the last to assume this responsibility while Kevin coordinated the entry funds and financials. Two things killed the Cal Classic at this point. First was the fact that each and every year, some of the birds that were received would either be sick, or possess one or more different ailments both bacterial and virus. In the case of the last Cal Classic, a person or persons sent in birds which were infected with circovirus which then spread throughout the kit boxes and eventually about half of the birds entered either died or had to be killed. I saw it first hand and it was a very bad deal. Tim worked his ass off trying to get a handle on it and even worse was the virus ended up effecting some of his own kit birds as well as stock birds.
On top of all of this was the discovery of END (exotic newcastle disease) within the greater riverside area, largely concentrated in the Norco/MiraLoma areas. The entire area was quarantined and the USDA was killing entire flocks of birds at record paces. Being in a quarantine area, Tim's own property was quarantined and routinely inspected. It was very frustrating.
In the end, the remaining birds were pretty much gotten rid of due to the fact that they could be carriers of circovirus. I believe some were given back to their owners with the knowledge they needed to be careful with the returning birds.
This whole scenario was compounded by Kevin's departure from the roller scene and the massive expense in vet bills and medications greatly depleted the income reserve which was intended to be awarded to the winners of the fly later that year.
I believe if someone wanted to start up the Cal Classic, they could easily do so. But I think many people were aware of the tremendous problem the sickness issue became, as well as the fact that one person must devote about nine months of their own time to flying and managing the kits as well as organizing the final event and auction.
It was a great fly, there is no doubt about it. And I would like to see it happen again. Whoever that person is will have to have a fairly good knowledge of pigeon related illnesses, how to treat them as well as a vast knowledge of how to manage birds from different families.
Brian.

Al,
John Van Broek and Mike Curtis were the ones to start the Calif, Classic. John ran and flew the kits the first few years his self and handled the money, put on the auction and had the big Bar-B-Que. I know because I won the first Calif, Classic and I also spent one year flying the thing. I new when John handed the fly over to others, it would probably not last long. It is a huge undertaking to bring in birds from all over, and pull this thing off. J.V Did an awesome service for the hobby with this fly with that fly. I think hawks and the devastating diseases that now get passed around would make the fly almost impossible to run smoothly. Tobad, it was a fun fly. Mongrel Lofts

LOL. I would need a lot more years and knowledge. I would also think I would have to have qualified a few times and Placed high in the ff or w/c. You have to have some type of recognition to hold something like this or it will not be successful. I'm sure you know what I'm saying...

I know you have a good eye for good pigeons just by the company you keep.

Thanks for the complements George.

I try to talk and listen to a lot of knowledge breeders and take in all of the info they have to share. Keith London being one of the main ones, who has shared a lot that he knows to help me out with my program. I feel you need to ask the questions and listen to what these breeders have to say in order to get better at what you are trying to achieve.

Hey George,

I'm glad it's not going to be canceled. My eggs just started hatching, don't think they will be old enough to enter. Maybe next year...

Right before the BOP migrate they EAT everything in sight to get a nice layer of fat around thier belly for the LONG fly HOME. FEB. Thru late March

Efren if you want to do good you must have DISCIPLINE. LOL

Efren by Flying and feeding the BOP they will stay longer and if a pair showes up they might try to nest nearby, since the food is plentiful if you keep feeding them.

P.S. AT what age do you wean your young Birds ?

dont get your teams destroyed if you look at the Riverbed San Gabriel valley River along the 605 freeway you will see all the BOP on the wires .

that is a migrating route with plenty of Water and those High lines that they perch on

If you have to bypass the first Fly and save your good Birds and then you will be ready for the second FLY.

If you want to talk to me hit me on my Cell 702-296-1973

What I have learned from racing horses, flying pigeon, and my other animals I had at one time is that the best dont always WIN you have to be a great Manager of whatever you are trying to get the BEST results from by picking your SHOTS.

I know you are loyal to your Club but dont let the Club dictate when you fly let the CONDITIONS ( clear skys) dictate when you PUT THEM UP !

George,

Never counted the days but as soon as they are ready to pull out. I'll pull them out then start feeding them once per day so that they are hungry for about 3 days, this way they know how they get feed. Then I'll let the kit door open and let them fly around (they usually don't fly too much, floor to kit box). About a week or 2 of this they take off on their own an try to survive from the bops...

So to sum this up, I start weaning them as soon as they can fly...

Thanks for the info George.

I tell myself the exact thing, but I breed my birds to fly and I love looking at them fly. I think one of the hardest things to do is to hold in your birds. For me this is a challenge, but I'm doing/learning as I have not flown my A team for a few days now and am planning on keeping them in until the bop's ease up. I guess I'm learning the hard way...

As much as I think this would be great and fun...man what a risk to have the possibility of birds being sick and affecting your whole loft. I know I would not risk it.

What about the California State FLy....what happened to that...I had talke with ABel about helping out on the North end....taking all the qualifiers from the Fall fly of 08 and The W/C of 09....any word on that...
