My kit consists of young birds with the exception of three birds. I have them flying 30 minutes or so sometimes a little longer. Nice height, around 100 feet. They fly in a nice figure eight pattern for the most part, kitting tighly. They are doing everything they should except rolling well as a group. They set up and hover, sometimes they break and sometimes not. If they weren`t y/b`s I would cut way back on fly time. After I took the four breeders out and put them back in the breeder box,the kit seems a bit lost, even the old birds. I see some improvement but it is pretty slow in coming. The birds that were pretty hot this summer have stiffened up after the moult. I have begun to explore various methods of stimulation. I have changed the feed from pigeon seed to Purina Green. I use milo to "water it down". I throw a dab of mix in the kitbox to get em to trap. I was feeding just under three cups to 22 birds. There is always at least one full cup of milo. I have also thought that it might be worms because of some unorthodox rolling from some stable birds from last season. I started them on five days of a 5 in one. I saw some improvement yesterday, hopefully it will continue. I also cut them back a half cup, which I feel may be pushing the boundary in keeping some meat on them. I don`t know which made them perform better the reduction in feed or the wormer. I would like to know if anyone else has experienced this type of behavior as their kit develops thru the course of a year. Will it get better?

They should get better as they continue to mature. The one thing I learned that was if I changed something in their schedule(no matter what)to only change one thing at a time and to give it 3 or 4 days to take effect.Other than that I found myself trying to figure out what was doing what and for the most part I wasn,t allowing enough time for it to take effect.I am guessing your birds are either going thru the moult or not to long over it.David

Hey
How often are you flying this team. You may have to rest them a little more. I fly my birds that are well into the roll at least 2 good days of rest in between flies. Sometimes longer. I also play with the feed a little more. Because it is cold they mostly get regular pigeon pop and a little more of it. RIght now....I know that the performance is going to go down just a little because it is winter time and I am not preparing for a comp. But they do put on a pretty good show everytime I put them up. They roll because the feel good and are healthy.....(my birds). If you pulled birds from the team it may take up to or even past two weeks before they recover. You broke up part of the team...with a team comes timing and friendship...well..you took there friends....LOL! If I had a new bird to my A team or pull a couple...they are confused for up to two weeks. You may have pulled a lead bird..or a trigger bird too. It is amazing that one bird can screw up the kit...as well as one bird making it rock and roll.
I agree with David...if you try something..do it for weeks at a time. If you change the feed...do it for a couple of weeks to see the reaction, if you rest them 2-3 days at a time...do it for a longer period to see if it works. They do get a little lazier during the winter too.

Paul. I fly seven and rest three. I kinda have to fly like this because I still have birds coming in. Your squeaks in fact, still have to be flown out. Today is the last day before the rest period. The 5in1 will be over the day before they come back out. I hope this solves the stiffness problem.I have some birds that were looking really nice and now I am getting maybe half of what I was before the moult. One an additional item. How do I get the birds that don`t like the pellets to eat them? Starve them? The hens won`t hardly touch them. The kit acts like they were raised on them. The Lavin cock showed the others on the first time I fed the pellets. It does give them a nice shine. The droppings are firm and easy to scrape. So far so good. They didn`t sky out either with the 18% protein.

Kenny, I have noticed the same thing with my young bird kits. Even the A-team went stiff right after the molt. I didn't change anything, just stayed the course, and today, they came out back in top form! What a relief that was. What kind of pellets do you use? I'm using Purina's FLOCK RAISER pellets. They are very small, not much bigger than a grain of wheat. I have never had any problems with any of the birds eating them. They used to pick around the large pellets. FYI Cliff

Hey Cliff, I am feeding the Purina Green pellets @ 18% Specially designed for healthy pigeons. They are pea sized as well. I haven`t experienced any ill effects other than the hens won`t eat them.
