Tony.

Just read your article on your German Shepherd.

I also have a dog that helps keep my birds in the air, she is very friendly and just like to be around the birds. The first squab I raised last year was abandoned in the nest by it parents, at about 1 week old, it was freezing in February so we brought it into the house and the kids, wife and myself all fed it up. One day the wife got back from work and realised the dog had got into the room with the bird, it was absoulutely saturated, she had nearly licked it to death.

Anyway, the main reason for this post is I was alarmed to read somewhere dogs can pass paratyphoid onto birds, I did have an outbreak last year and put it down to mice or sparrows. The loft is now vermin and sparrow proof and I no longer let the dog near them, though she still keeps them of the ground. You will I am sure be better clued up on these things than me, thought I would just pass on what I had read.

Cheers.

Al.

Hey, Al. Pigeon lollipops for dogs aside, how's those Moseleys coming along. Shagging OK are they? Any eggs yet? It's slow progress down here in Surrey. Methinks it's the hens - there are few eggs, as opposed to eggs which they sit on but get nowhere with. All I'm getting is the odd bird here and there. The maintenance stuff is now becoming a real chore. You know, changing water and scraping crap off everything, when you just want to get back indoors. It seemed so much more manageable with the warm sun beating down on me. Now, with winter slowly extending its dark tenticles - now, is that poetry, or what? - actually, dark testicles has more of a ring to it; anyway, it's got to be cold where you are. Are your tenticles/testicles frozen yet?

Ally's from Scotland, by the way.

Hi Shaun.

I put down the six pairs from Dave about a week and a half ago, also the cock he gave me with a Graham Dexter hen I have on loan from a pal in Perth. At the same time I also put down 6 feeder pairs. I have just shifted 8 eggs, got another 3 in the bowls with another due tommorrow. So at least they are laying, I also put down another couple of pairs of feeders this weekend so I have 14 boxes on the go.

I have given Dave's birds some calciboost to help them on their way.

I dont mind tending them at this stage, they get fed and clean water before and after work. It is when there are squabs in the boxes things get really messy, I may be tempted to go to an open loft, we shall see.

The weather hasn't been too cold here lately but we have had a few gales, hopefuly we shall have a mild winter like the last few years.

I had a good weekend flying my 20 young birds, they are all through the molt now, flying at a decent height, kitting very well, and I started to see some nice rolls, even got my first glimpse of a break today, it put a smile on my face.

Things are looking up.

Just going to fix myself a wee dram to cap the weekend off.

Cheers.

Hi Scott.

I still cant believe how good a deal I got, especially now I have half a loft full of Dave's birds (till January anyway, he needs them back to get fit for next years competitions).

Dave did not visit me but I drove down to collect the birds 2 weeks ago, 1000 mile round trip but it was well worth it. You can imagine the wifes comments!

I spent about 3 hours with him, saw his set up and a couple of kits fly. None of his birds were properly fit but they were still a great sight. I got a wealth of information about training, feeding etc, a loan of 6 pairs, a hawk victim to keep and his finishing shot was he would sort me out with two pair to keep.

One of the best eyeopeners was how simple he keeps things, very simple feeding, flying and selecting, so it seems but I do not doubt there is still an awfull lot more to it than that.

Anyway, progress at last!!

Just shows you never know whats round the corner.

Cheers.

That is fantastic Ally, Dave is a good guy and spent a week here a year and a half ago or so, birds were crap but we had a good time even though I had a hard time understanding the Englishmans English LOL.
We both have the same sence of humor so we jab each other pretty good.
I hope that myself and the wife can get over there soon, maybe Spring I think.
As for Dogs , I have two, they could care less about the birds , same with my cats.
I also have a few Bantam chickens,5 geese and two ducks and some sheep I have never had a problem.

Scott.

I know what you mean, even Dave and I had a few pardons, sorries, what was that, he has a strong accent and my cheuchtar twang didn't help.

If you make it north of the border when you are over give me a shout, I can give you some pointers, (on Scotland, not rollers!!!!!) if you have never been to Scotland its well worth a look.

Cheers.

Al.
