How often do you wormed your birds. I have been worming mine once a month. Also dust for mites and lice at the same time using Prozap dust. Thanks

Hey ranger632, it is generally recommended that the birds be a given wormer like Wazine, Telmintic and Ivomec before the breeding and flying season (in California I would give it to my kit birds after the winter lockdown before I started flying them). I think doing it monthly is over medicating them.
Other than this, I would medicate when I see symptoms such as rapid weight loss (Jenny Craig move over), running very fluid droppings, glassy and sunken appearance in the eyes and when normal day to day activity is dampened along with a ruffled appearance.
If your birds are infested, you will see live and dead worms in the droppings. I actually have digital video of bird droppings crawling with worms, some still wriggling. Let me know if you want to see it. ---------- FLY ON! Tony Chavarria

Ranger632, also, I would limit the dusting or eliminate it altogether. Don’t inhale that dust into your lungs on such a regular basis. Unless you have wild birds mixing with your pigeons, I would use Permectrin in the bath water once a month. You could even do it less than that.
I want to mention that I use rubber gloves that are made to be used with liquid insecticides. No point in absorbing it through your skin.
Let me commend you for your proactive efforts to ward off problems. You are on the right track to become a responsible breeder.

I just spread a wing and look for lice and mites . If I see em I treat if I don`t,I carry on. That easy. Most insecticides work very rapidly. I feel there is a certain balance in the kit box. I you upset it, you have flareups of parasites and disease. I keep it clean but not spotless I practice a certain level of bio security.ie.. keeping the lofts, birds, and equipment seperated and clean. Don`t kill yourself or your birds trying to keep them perfect. Keep em healthy, dry and well ventilated and mother nature will take care of the rest. yits V99

Thanks to you all. Looks like I was over doing it. I will keep a close eye on them and if they need something then I will take care of it. Thanks David Garcia

How about trying this........don't medically treat any healthy bird. Worm them only if there is evidence of worms.
Do you medicate yourself when you are not sick; or your kids?
