The best way is to lock down your birds. You think you took care of the bad pigeon but others move in soon after. You will fly your good pigeons thinking the coast is clear and Bam they will get hit again. There is no end to it, therefore, at this time of year SAVE your best birds from the torture for the next season. Been there done that…. Best of Luck…

Norm, I have learned allot last year from those bad pigeons. I almost gave up this sport due to them because of the way they cut down your achievements. Last year I wrote the following in a neighboring site to vent my frustration and as you can see how frustrated I was:
“I really was down over the weekend and really giving up on the whole thing. What fun is it when you just let the birds out for an exercise and watch them being massacred by the predators? Every time I give the birds a breather and bam here they go...Songbirds will come and the hawks will go away, they say. Bull shit, they wouldn't. There must have been hundreds of Stirlings and other birds around every time, and the hawks just went after the rollers the second they were let out. A blast of the horn doesn’t even scare them anymore. Like Brian said a while back, they wouldn't even flinch until they get what they want and they do. I have never seen them so aggressive like they have been. I have lost 18 rollers since Jan 1st of this year. A whole kit for no reason what so ever. I guess the SOBs have a reason, food. I kept on thinking, what an awful way to die, being hunted down. I watched the SOB drop from the sky like if the sky just opened up and he dropped with such speed, forming like an arrow, shooting at the birds from above and snatch the roller like nothing. Thus far I have asked three of the SOBs to leave, and another three just moved in without permission. When is it gonna end? Six or seven months of the year are hawk season? How many months to train and fly? It is not just for loosing birds helplessly but the way they are lost and the brutal way of being killed. Do we breed rollers to feed the SOBs? Is it our faults for them being killed? If it is, then how in the world can anybody train and fly rollers? Once they are attacked, they go all over the place, some fly high and some go hide to save their skin and come back in an hour or so later. Then how can they get beck to the swing of things after a lock down for them to kit and fly together and set for breaks and so on? Is this what this hobby all about, or becoming? Just watch the chase and the death over and over and over again? My god, I don't think I could keep sounding the horn for long if they just keep on coming. I am seriously starting to have second doubt about the whole thing. It is really start to bother me, because every time I loose a bird, I just look to the ground and shake my head in sorrow and so helpless knowing that nothing I can do. They will win no matter what. They have proved it to me thus far. I really don't know what to do anymore to whether stick it out or pack it up??”

Jay, I feel your pain my friend, been there done that. My father use to raise pigeons back in Bosnia and when ever he had problem with hawk he took care of it rather fast. You see hawks were protected in Bosnia too until all the pigeon guys got together and started a petition. And that my friend is what we need to do (or something like that) because there are too many hawks around these days. I mean if the farmers are allowed to protect their animals why shouldnt we too. Something needs to be done soon or the hobby is going to hell. Just my opinion, I dont mean to start anything that will start bunch of crap I'm just stating my opinion
