Hey all you good guys out there!I havent forgotten you all!
Between work family --and of course building my breeding loft-I havent had time for anything else.well-its allmost done 2 5x8 compartments seperated by sliding doors with a fly pens 2x10 all as varment proof as I can make it.Two layers of wire --one welded and one half inch mesh to keep out black snakes-sparrows-racoons-skunks-weasels and mice. Iwill put steel wool in every crack and crevice for mice( they hate steel wool)It cuts there mouth when they chew it!
I have six sepreate nest boxes in each compartment 36x18x15 inches high.I had all 3 of my sons out ther pounding nails stappling wire etc.I only have some nest fronts left to do.

Then I believe i will be ready for the BIRDS!
I do have a question?--I want to know what meds. you guys recemend?-- I am getting birds from two different sources- not counting pumpers --I guess that would be three sources.I am a bit concerned about birds comming from three sources and putting them all together at once.My plan is to breed the two famalies seperate and find out over the next two years or so to find out which is best andcull the rest.
What would you do as far as meds go? PMV ?Paratyphoid? Canker? Etc. etc.Your recemendations are most treasured.
Thank you all for all your previous advise--I know you old salts must get a little board with these new guys type of questions but your advise really means the world to me and i am sure to others. THANKS!

My suggestion would be to isolate each group by themselves for a few weeks. Treat them with 4-N-1 for 10 days followed by vitamins with pro bios. That is just to be safe. Then once you feel confident, the birds can be co-mingled. Vaccinating for PMV is always a good recommendation, especially with circumstances such as yours.

Thanks Brian!Sounds like good advice.Do you vaccinat for PMV and paraty.at the same time or is it to much for the birds at one time? same with wormer or 4and1 etc.I just dont want to overload the birds with meds .

My method for treating birds, whether preventively or from obvious signs of sickness or dibilitation,is pro-bios first and foremost. Its true, that certain medications and anti-biotics will kill bad as well as good bacterias, but remember pigeons can hide deficientys and they can easily go the other way on you,by going straight to meds or anti-bios.Build them up first, treat them then build them back up.

I learned this method from an old racing homer guy ,who is our local distributor for vita-king products. His racers are straight from Mike Ganus and you never saw birds with such exuberence and glean.Hope this helps....Aloha,Todd

Fr.Mike, if you keep your lofts clean, moisture free and varmint free you don't need to vaccinate for PMV or Paraty. Always prevention is better than treating. If you don't give the shot correctly you could end up killing the bird, just be careful. 4 N 1 is very good product to have, and also you can use yogurt as good bacteria generator after medication. Just add a tablespoon full in a gallon of water. When you purchase antibiotics, get two different kinds so that you can alternate those products when given to your birds so the bacteria can not build up resistance to them easily. You need Saven dust to get red of external parasite such as mites and lice. You also need to get wormer medication. The first thing you need to do when you get your birds is to give them wormer med for two days to clean them out from internal parasite. Then give them antibiotics for 7 to 10 days. After that give them the yogurt for three days and you will be on your way. A month before breeding, give them the 4-N-1 followed by yogurt. Remember to follow the manufacturer instructions for giving any meds.

Foy's sell a starter medication kits to start with. The price is always discounted to help you start, then you add to that kit as you go. Check them out. Good Luck...

Just like the other guys said 4 in 1 would be a good choice.

How many fanciers give medicine to breeders before breeding season (clean them up and get them in perfect health before breeding?)

How many think it is absolutely not necessary to give birds medicine unless there is sign of sickness.

Thanks, -Rauf
