I have some rollers at a friends house in Bakersfield Ca. We have been trying to send them by way of USPS with no results. We keep being told that there are no flights to anywhere in Nc. I had just sent him some of my birds to his house from here in Nc and had no problems from my end.
Can anyone come up with some suggestions for me to try? I sure would appreiciate any help at all at this point. Thanks Ronnie

What you need to do is get your friend in Bakersfield the phone number to express mail where you ship from. Have you friend call your express mail and see what is up. Sometimes you have to ship to the closest "Hub" and then they will make it to your house. I had the same problem when I shipped some birds to Ohio...they said no flight.....I called the hub in Cincinatti and they told me to put the address on them and ship them to the nearest hub. Remember they are looking at a computer screen. The guy in Cin. told me that if you can get mail...you can get birds...that simple...it is a matter of having the birds shipped to the closest hub.\\\ Or you can have someone that you know who is in between get the birds shipped to them and then that person can hold them and feed them up and then ship them on to you. I had to do that one time. rock and ROLL

Ronnie the issue is with the manager at LAX. That person is a real pain in the butt. I have several guys I have been trying to get birds to that live within two hours of Atlanta, but that manager still won't let them go, even though there is a direct flight. The reason you got them to NC was more than likely, there was a direct flight they found that was going straight to Charlotte or maybe Raleigh-Durham. But there probably isn't a flight from the main NC hub to LAX. I'll know more next week as I have some chickens that are supposed to be coming from South Carolina. Should be interesting. PS--I checked with Fed Ex and was told they would ship live birds, next day delivery, but it has to be business to business. So you might check with them as a go-around attempt. Brian.

Hey Ronnie and Brian
The best way is to ship them is on Delta Airlines as cargo. It cost a little more than the post office but they will get there in a few hours. You have to call Delta cargo and make a reservation because they put them on the flight that you book.It has to made at least 24 hours before drop off.You can also ship them C.O.D which is great. There are other airlines that will ship them as cargo but you would have to call around. I found Delta to have the best price and they are the only airline to ship C.O.D out of the ones that I checked.
Good Luck John

Brian I sent some chickens to a friend in Bakersfield a couple of weeks ago from here in Nc. I had no problems what so ever. It's getting my pigeons sent to me from Bakersfield back here to Nc. It seems they can go one way but can't make a return trip. The LAX problem is a real problem when it comes to the postal service for sure. I can't count the number of times I called and talked to people about getting them on a plane. I even went as fas as calling the head guy in Washington DC for shipping bird problems!...lol. Still the end result was, sorry there are no flights this week please check back next monday.
I talked to John about this a while back and he most likely has the right answer to fix this problem. I just didn't want to ask the guy that has my pigeons to have to drive from Bakersfield all the way to LAX to put them on a plane. It's looking like I have no choice any more but to give John's suggestion a try if I want to get my birds here. Brian, you might want to give it a try as well. It may cost a little more but at least they can get there.
Paul, Brian, John...Thanks for all the input. I will let you all know how it turns out.

John, one thing about shipping Delta Air Cargo. Delta required that the birds be shipped in a crate that meets USDA requirements. They must be wood or plastic or firerglass, they must have the front open at least 75% with heavy gauge wire, they must have a muslin viewing curtain over the wire screen, they must have handles, they must have a perch that allows the bird to sit naturally and hop off without bumping its head, they must have drink and water troughs, etc... Check with Delta first .

Russ,
I just had some shipped last month and I shipped them in a regular shipping box (card board)on Delta. Also when you ship via the post office they are shipped on Delta, United,US Air and American. They use all the airlines to ship and they are just the middle man, so this way you cut out the middle man.I work for American and they ship birds all the time in shipping boxes ( card board). I would have sipped my birds on American but Delta was the better dealand had C.O.D. Maybe the rules have change with in a month. If so buy a very small dog kennel that's ok to ship.

John, I have shipped the cardboard USPS approved boxes in the past (on Delta)with no problem. 2 weeks ago I agreed to do a favor for a friend in Hawaii, and I received 6 birds for him from another fancier in Montana, I took them for a vet inspection and ordered the import permit, and took them to Delta Air-Cargo at LAX, and was refused shipment for the reasons I stated. They also stated that an inspector could give them (Delta)a fine for not following shipping regulations as pertains to pigeons and doves. Go figure? Russ
