I often hear breeders talking about "character" of rollers as something to breed towards. What do you feel they are describing? If you also look for the "character" in a bird what do you look for? How important is it to you?

Character is a large term...Character is just ONE thing that you breed toward...I do not think that character is at the top of the list...The roll is..but most birds with the good character have the good roll. Character to me is the bird overall...Hits it in the air...is a team player...has that "smart" look...and just stands tall. You can just look at the bird and you can tell that it is a rocket. A lot of good faciers can pick out a bird with good character in seconds...when peaking into a kit box. The two Ruby Rollers that I own are in the feature article photo...They have "good" character...they way they look in the photo...the eye is peircing, they stand tall, they look like they are bad and they know it...the look that demands respect. Now that you see the photo..you have a start on character..I will now explain how they act in my loft. They are both very tame birds...the cock is very cocky...but not mean..the hen is henny but is a little bizzy body...they always stand tall..like they are proud!!!..Although I did not fly the pair out...they produce the goods..Scott Campbell grabbed that little mealy hen the second he saw her...and said that this one has the goods!!He saw the Character without knowing a thing about her.....So...the character is just ONE part of picking good breeding stock....The bird with the character is the first one out the door when you open the kit box...pops out of the roll like it is showing the world that I am bad to the bone...has total control and knows it...likes to roll and it shows....lands on the kit box after a fly...with wings drooping...feathers all F*&C&^D up...but still stands tall and stares at you with those peircing eyes filled with "character"...and those eyes say...I just worked my tail off..but I looked damn good....I am one bad dude....I am respected by all...and at the same time the bird will eat out of your hand like it was a squeeker....That my friend is character!

To me character is based on allot of things. Usually character is expressed more in cock birds. Therefore, I like the heny cocks, which are the ones that not too aggressive and not bullies. They seem to behave better in flying with the kit and perform as good as a good hen. Cocky birds are troublesome and go out of control on a short notice. I like the timid character in all my rollers and that personality of a pet bird. I like the family and team atmosphere in my birds through uniformity which in term will define the characters of each individual bird and the makeup of the team. Those desired characters of each individual can be seen at feeding time. Where, all start eating in harmony without the aggressiveness of certain individuals and the fighting to dominate.

The character of each individual is also of being fertile and able to produce and be a good parent when the time is called upon. Uniformity of your team defines the character make up of your family. For that reason it is on my top list when breeding along with performance. You can have all the good birds you want, but if they have fertility problems you can not produce too many of them and if you do, you just produce that problem in the offspring. If they can not get along together, then they are just individuals and not a family and distant to just be in the 11 bird box.

The eye sheen, the stance and the wing butts showing, alertness, strong homing ability and that good stuff is always a must. If any offspring don’t exhibit those basic characteristic attributes, then it is culled or deposed of. Once you have uniformity in your loft as I stated above, you will have a uniform character of all your birds and seldom will you get an offspring that is culled due to this issue.
