Howdy, my name is Mark, I'll go by SlipSpur on this forum ( and the other one's I frequent ). I've been reading the back posts that catch my eye... crash course in Rollers. All I know about Rollers is that I've wanted some for a long time and just bought 4 pair and if I can contact another breeder I meet at the Shawnee Ok. Pigeon show, I'll buy a few more.
One question is... what is the best way to prevent/treat mite's? I've raised gamefowl and show bantams for years but pigeons are a different breed of cat... I'm afraid to use what I put on our chickens.
Another one, what size square and width is best for Rollers roosts? I made some 10 inches square out of 1X4's for our breeder pens... the birds don't look all that comfortable with the width.
I've built new facilities for the chickens, going to turn the old chicken house into a loft... problem is, theres a lot of mite's in the old wood... what would be best to spray it with before using it ( I'm not burning it down ;).
One of the cocks we just purchased holds his wings a lot lower than the rest of the birds, he's fine, just wondering how bad a fault that'll be?
I'll have a lot more questions, I'll keep reading the past posts... maybe won't have ta bother y'all so much.

Hey Spur. Texas Panhandle here bro. The rollers like little bigger quarters than 10x10. Mine are three compartment,12x14x14 each compartment. There are a number of remedies to the mites. Sevin dust on the bird areas and a permectin dip twice a year. I also put a pantyhose with a dab in the toe, hang it over the trap. When the birds brush it ....... Get a good yard spray,or permectin, and spray the coop really well. Give it a few days to dry up and wear down a bit. Add birds. If you want e-mail me redneckhippie15@yahoo.com. V99

This was an email, I couldn't send it, the puter said " redneckhippie15@yahoo.com. " wasn't a working address, so... Hey Tex, Thanks for answering my post. It's just the roosts in the pens that are 10"X10", the pens are 2'X3'X2'... also triple decker, I built them for bantam breeding pens. I just had to put roosts in them suitable for pigeons... I just guess-timated the size from Kit boxes I've seen, they seem to be working pretty well, the birds just look kinda on edge with them just being 31/2 inches wide. These little birds don't eat much do they? I told the guy that I got our birds from ( Bill Gambill ) what was in our game fowl feed, he said it was perfect... it has Austrian winter peas, Canadian peas, whole corn, black sunflower seed, oats, milo, wheat,..alfalfa, laying and Calf Manna pellets. It doesn't seem to be bothering them, their stool is solid, thats a good thing because we buy the feed already. I've been reading that I wouldn't want to feed that to a kit that I'm flying, but for breeders I hope it works. Any suggestions? Mark ( SlipSpur )

Spur, I was just in the e mail, try it again. Sounds like you have a good handle on it. It would seem the starting point for flyers is one cup per ten birds. Most use a wheat milo mix in varying percentages. For the breeders a 12-17% mix is fine. When they aren`t breeding keep em fit but not thin. An exercise pen or access to the sunlight is good for breeders and bad for kitbirds. Kitbirds like to fight and fornicate instead of resting while in the kitbox. Most boxes are smallish and dark for this reason. Good luck YITS V99

I would paint the loft and mite spray it. Let it dry out before putting birds back in. Can use dipps or sprays or powders for mites. Pick one. Good luck and congratulation on your new birds.

I use Frontline spray on the chickens, as long as I don't get it on their vent they do fine... and it works great. I ain't sure about using it on the Rollers, if I had some culls, I'd experiment, but with just 8 birds I need some confermation before I use it.
The old chicken house will rig up nice for the Rollers, it has a cement floor with 3 pens, a 12 x 12 inside section with an 8 x 10 x 6 outside run, another L shaped section thats 8 x 6 with the side of the L being 2 1/2 x 6 also with a 8 x 10 x 6 outside run. In the end of the L shaped section theres a small 4 x 6 inside pen with an outside pen thats 4 x 5 x 6. The two big outside runs have 2 ft of 1x2 welded wire along the bottom with 4 ft of 2 x 4 the rest of the way up and 2 x 4 over the top... will the 2 x 4 work or do I need to change it out? Hey Mark, Brian Middaugh here, I have talked to a few other times on the gamefowl sites. When you purchase your birds buy them like you do gamefowl. Go and watch the birds perform and select them from the air. There is some people who will sell you birds that couldn't get off the loft roof. So you have to be careful. Email me when you get a chance at rollerpigeon@adelphia.net or rollerpigeon@yahoo.com I just came in this morning from Mississippi and plan to stay home for the hoildays but plan on returning back to Mississippi come tuesday morning. Keep your operation simple, neat, and clean.
Good, clean, and balanced feed; some minerals; some vitamins; grit; clean water; spray or powder for mites and other parasites; nesting bowls.........then throw the rest of the crap away.
Fly them hard; cull them when needed.
I have found (especially in my case) that poor performance is usually the fault of the owner's poor management of his birds.
Pick the birds you buy out of the air.
Listen to the successful flyers.
Develope your program and stick with it.
Have fun!
