Tomorrow iget my first Rollers they were shiped to a freind in Baltimore --so i will drive down in the AM-- my guy in Balt.says they appear healthy but very light.he said they feel like flyers and not breaders.either they were flown or under fed.these birds were originally sold by the guy in balt.as proven birds--and the guy he sold them to had a work change and could not take care of them(obviously)As he said they seem bright and chipper--But light. He was extreamly reluctrant to let them go because he has a very good reputation in his state. He also guaranteed the birds should they have problems.
My plan is to get the birds-put them on Foys Pro Bios Plus all the feed thy can eat-for about a week then worm them.then wait about another week and treat them with 4-n-1 What would you guys recamend for feed for my thin charges?I haveBROWNS-NC-12% should i add corn? Peas?or would you change the plan altogether?
Thanks for all your help! Mike

I would use a 17% pigeon feed with popcorn and safflower mix. Add dry crumb dog or catfood to up the protien and fat. cat food is 31% and dog is 21%. chick starter might work too. or pigeon pellet mix. Just watch them daily and check crop and poop. Have the birds been given PMV shots? Treat for all know pigeon diseases. Sound like these birds have been under alot of stress being pass around. God bless and good luck. Congratulations on your new birds.

My advice is to feed good BIRD based protein. Animal byproducts used in dog and cat food can not be digested by birds. You can feed 40% protein and if it is not digestible protein, you get high protein poop and or liver damage.

If these are your fist birds...I would not load them up with to many meds right off the bat. I would give them some good pigeon feed..I use "Winners Cup" 16% during the Winter. It has Wheat, Milo, Sauflower, popcorn, maple peas, australian peas, ???pea, and these little black seeds..???. It is a really good mix. That is my Winter feed. I switch to pellets, wheat, milo, Sauflower during breeding season. Kit birds also get the Winners Cup during the Winter. During the summer I mix my own speacial blend of feed for my kit birds.
As for the Meds...I am under the belief that if they ain't sick..don't treat them. I would just give them a nice loft..and good feed...fresh water...and look at the poop...that tells you a lot. If it is foul smelling, runny, or a wierd color..I may treat. Check there mouth for canker from the stress of shipping. You could worm them if you wanted...then wait awhile and if they show signs or symptoms..then treat with meds. I would for sure mix them up some Apple cider vinegar, or some vitamins in the water. Just my thoughts.
If you want to up the protein...just by a richer feed...I use 28% protein pellets for the breeders..but I also cut it with Wheat/milo/Sauflower...my brother did all the math..(nerd) and gave me a rough estimate of around 20% protein with my pellet mix.

You should ask the person your getting the birds from what to do with them. Because everyone on list may have a different family of birds or live in a different part of the country. Different families of birds respond differently to feeds and what works for someone else may not work for you or your family of birds. Also birds may respone diffrently in different climates or areas.
If these birds birds are from secret Agent, then they will do just fine on a regular pigoen feed (12% - 14%) without corn. These birds work great and you don't have to prep them to spin. They spin because they love to. You don't have to trick them into spinning. When they go they go in big bunches. They are easy to work with and lots of fun.
Good Luck and Have Fun!
