I was told to add Permectrin II as directed on the bottle and a teaspoon of bleach to their bath water... all well and good, except... the one time I've given them a bath ( straight water ) they drank quite a bit of it... is this going to harm the birds?

I was also told they love a bath ( seen that ) even in cold weather... what temp is the cut off point for baths? I don't want them getting sick.

I stopped using bleach a few years ago and I have never been happier in regards to my birds health. I only use bleach when I want to disinfect the waters by filling them up and letting them sit with bleach water for half a day, then thoroughly flushing them out before refilling.
I use ACV in the bath water along with permectrin, ivomectrin and even bluing. The birds drink it and they are fine.
If you want a disinfectant for the water, try Nolvossan which will do the job of bleach (better for organic surfaces) as well not raise the alkyline levels in your loft and kit box.

What does the ACV do in the bath water? I dump the water between pens, I only have 4 tubs and 8 breeding pair so it isn't too much trouble... I'll more tubs soon.

Well for one, it acts like a tonic in the bath, it helps loosen debris and helps molting feathers to break out. But more than anything else, it helps to acidify your loft and your birds, greatly reducing the risk of pro-alkyline bacteria.
Since I quit using bleach in my waterers and bath pans, I cannot recall a bird getting parathyphoid at my lofts in two years. And I have as many as 500 pigeons during some times of the year.

Brian.

Would it be ok to start giving breeders ACV in their water? I have some about to lay, some eggs about to hatch and others feeding squabs of various ages.

If so what sort of quantity per litre/gallon?

Cheers.

Al.

You can provide ACV in the water 365 days a year, breeding or not. I add it to the drinking water generally every other watering. A capful per gallon is adequate. It doesn't take much.

I use the regular distilled vinegar that I use for myself.I never measure but approx.1 tablespoon or more to a gallon of water.I have even used a 1/4 cup to a gallon but it is just a waste. As Brian said it don,t take much and I too use it year round.Everything gets it.Dogs,Chickens,Quail,Myself.In the Winter I use every other day but use it daily the rest of the year.I have trouble getting the vinegar with the muther in it and if I can get it the cost is to much. When I switched to the distilled kind I never seen any difference in the birds. It is one of those things that I think is as neccessary as their feed & water.Once you start using it you will never quit.Anyone I have ever told to use it have come back and said what a difference they seen in their birds. And the cost is very low.My thoughts.LOL.
