hi there everybody :)

i am an nz roller newbie that have just got hold of a pair of rollers off a good friend. we don't call them 'birmingham rollers', just plain 'roller pigeons'. most of us here breed rollers for show not performing, unlike our fellow australian mates. most of us here are into racing pigeons & fancy breeds (helmets, jacobins, etc).

my birds roll very short (less than 2 feet), but quite frequent (if locked down for days), not fast (you can see the wings and tails). the cock is better (black bird with white tipped wings) and looks keen to roll. the hen is a red/brown bird with splashes of white.

can anyone tell me if i can develop from these birds? i just want them to roll tight, fast and less than 10feet deep for my viewing pleasure (there's no roller kit competitions in new zealand).i intend to cross future good daughters back to the cock. rollers in new zealand don't come close to any of the quality that you guys have in america/uk/australia, so i guess i can't get other better birds here. to make matters really s*ck, nz govt prohibits any importing of live birds, eggs, semen etc.

i've kept pigeons when i was young but i must say that rollers are very different breed. they eat a lot less, can't take big grains & very selective when it comes to what kind of grains they eat. another thing i've noticed is they 'settle in' very slowly. the cock doesn't seem to be interested in the hen eventhough it's been a week since i've got them (in the old loft, the cock was paired to another hen and ditto to the hen).

cheers for any advice :)

If they are young birds...you can give them more time. If they are old birds...it may have been awhile since they have flown. It is so hard to tell. The best thing to do..would be to just breed what you have together and fly the young birds and then see what you get. Just get as much information of this website as possible. I know that there are people that have read every single post on this site. Since you can't get any new birds....I would fly the young up to two years and see if they get any better. YOu may get lucky...but you may get some good ones.

I'm new to Rollers too, but I've bred gamefowl for nearly 30 years and roller pigeons can't be any different than any other performance animal ( or fowl )... breed the best to the best ta get the best... you can improve them, it'll take time but you can do it.
