I'm hoping to get some responses from those of you who use wire breeding cages. I have the 8-compartment breeding cages. I know you use the same ones Tony. I've been noticing that when the birds are just walking around, their feet get caught on the wire. With closer observation I realized their toe nails are catching on the wire as they step. Looking a little closer I realized that their toe nails were really long, obviously they're not being worn down because they are not walking on a solid surface.
My question is whether or not this causes any problems with the eggs or the squabs when little when the birds sit the nest? I could see them piercing an egg or a small bird with those talons. Have any of you had any issues with this? Thanks in advance for your responses.

Darin, I have one of those breeding cages and have to trim the toenails from time to time. Never had them puncture any eggs though.

D,
Same here man! I just take out the old nail clippers and trim them up. I have even had to clip the end of a beak on the little hen. Her top beak would grow a little long.
Wait until your wife sees you clipping your pigeons toe nails.....she will think that you are wacked!

Paul,
She pretty much already thinks I'm wacked. Just wait till I have kits to fly everyday, she'll really think I've lost my mind. Actually, I thought of asking her to help me. I'll hold the birds and she can cut the nails. How do you think that will go over?
Something about a turd in a punch bowl comes to mind.
You got your World Cup kit ready to Rock and roll?

Greetings, Try a brick in the cages so they can wear thier nails down. And by all means trim the nails. How is the fertility of cage bred birds long term?

D,
The World Cup team is coming along. I am still getting to fly on a regular basis, I do not have a hawk problem. They are a little fat becuase of the better feed for the Winter. I had some guys come over the other day and they flew a little flat..I had some good breaks..but just a little flat. I have 14 in the A team right now and about 16 in the B team. I have about 6 birds in the B team that are ready to make the change to the A team. I will put a couple birds at a time into the kit and then fly a week or two before I put a couple more. I hope to do OK and be able to at least fly in some OK weather.
I just put my breeders together...
