My wife and I bought an area rug for our wood floor today and she bought something to go under it called non-slip Rug Underlay. We got it at Walmart and it comes in various sizes. The one we bought was 5' X 8' so it's pretty good sized and only cost about $10. It's made of a really soft, non-slip rubber substance that's non-toxic and washable. Anyway, it feels like the perfect stuff to grip the small feet of a new-born pigeon. You could probably cut 100 or more circular pads that would fit the bottom of a nest bowl perfectly. Two or three of these in the bottom of a next bowl and not only would the eggs sit right on top of a very cushioned and soft surface, when they hatch, there's plenty of holes and non-slip surface in the underlay that little guy's feet won't be slipping out from under him. They stick well to each other and would probably stick to the bottom of a plastic nest bowl real well also. Anyway, it's alot cheaper than buying 10 nesting felts from Foy's or Jedd's for $8 and I like this stuff better. Just something I thought I'd pass along. You probably find it in the same area as larger floor rugs. Let me know if any of you try it.

Thanks Jay - good tip on the rice. I didn't know that.
Any other money-saving tips or ideas out there that you guys use?

DD, I personally use shredded paper. I have a paper shredder that shreds a diamond shaped cut about 1" long. I mix the (a bit wet) shredded papers with Demetrious Earth or Saven Dust and shape it in the next bowl until it dries. Once it dries, it is formed and slowly left it up off of the bowl and squirt some DE underneath it. It works well.
