Hi folks.
I have a squab about 2 weeks old, noticed its growth slowed down
Its umbilical hole, I think, has not sealed up. It looks rather swollen, almost like a belly button. It is also rather hard round about and possibly infected.
Any ideas on how to treat and possibly prevent if possible.
Many thanks.

Al, Sounds like a possible canker infection. Do you notice a yellow color in the swollen area? If so, you can get canker medicine that you mix in the water or individual pills that you give each bird.

If it is internal navel canker,Emtryl from Foys worked well for me.I havent had this problem since 1997. For throat canker, look down the throat and check the toncils. If they are smooth that's most likly throat canker. The toncils should have little hair like groth's on them,on young, and older birds. If a young squeeker has canker.Look down the parents throat, and look for the hairs.Emtryl powder is easy to use just follow the instructions.Other medications didnt work for me. Canker was introduced into my loft by bringing in a bird that had it.-Scotty

Thanks chaps.
I have treated with Norcanker for the last couple of days but have seen no sign of improvement, I shall keep up the treatment and cross my fingers!!
I found this page which seems very good.

Al,
Canker could be the cause. I don't know if that would prevent a "hole" in your birds underbelly. I would recommend putting some corona sav on the infected area and see what happens. If it's a birth defect then there may not be anything you can do. But to help fight any further infection, the sav would do the trick. Just clean it off of debris from the next as often as you can.
