Any one out there have a problem with eye pox?
I have never had this problem before so I am clueless in what the effects are but after introducing a bird into my kit box, this same bird seems to have eye pox after it bumped hard. I figured it was just swollen from the bump. Altho, It has been 2 weeks and the eye is still messed up.
Only one eye is infected. It is closed with a cranker like residue around the edges.
Is it eye pox?
What is eye pox?
I heard the term before so I figured it is of the same.
I am gonna dispose myself of this bird but would like to know more about it before I do just incase I run into more birds with the same problem in the future. Since it was only in the kit box, my breeders should be safe of this disease. Any help to cure it will be greatly appreciated. I'll use this bird as for experiental treatment, then cull it after it is heal. Can't take the chance of it spreading regardless if it has healed.

Thor,
I think what you are describing is purely an infection.Eye infections in pigeons are very difficult to get rid of.If it was a one eye cold or pox, medications handle those in a reasonable time frame.Another thing to consider is the possibility that the bird was pecked in the eye.I have used many, many meds.and cures to try to handle an eye infection,to no avail. This is one for Veternarian, maybe a anti-bio can clear it up....:-)....Aloha,Todd

There is an eye drop called cold eye (I think) and they have also an ointment (spell?) that will help it. Put it on antibiotic for 7 to 10 days and that will take care of the infection. Anyway, I had a bald hen one time that bumped hard and caused its eye to become watery as you described. But cleared up in couple of days and changed the color of that eye from bull to pearl. So the bird became an odd eye after that.

Todd,
After the bird bumped hard, it was immediately placed in the hospital pen. So, no, its eye was not pecked at. It's still in there as I type.

Jay,
Your not pulling my leg here about the eye changing color. Haha
That's gotta be a keeper story. Thanks for you input and that great story. Man, I need more bull eye birds to bump. grin

Thor, I was not. I was surprised when that happened. I still can not personally believe it. But it is true.

Any who, no other birds in the kit box has crop up this eye disease or infection. Altho I have seen several birds at my buddy's loft (where this bird was bred) crop up with the same eye problem.
I just made my decision to kill the bird so there is little chance for it to spread further. My birds are very precious to me and things of this nature don't last long if it pops up.
Thanks for all comments,
Thor
