Do pigeons have the ability to taste? Can they taste "sweet" or "bitter"?

Pigeons can taste and smell very well from my experience. If you watch your breeders, they will often taste the water before they drink it.
About five years ago I wanted to start treating my show birds with occasional amounts of crushed peanuts. The first time I put some on the fly pen, they milled around pecking at it. They had never had it before. In a very short time it was gone. By the third time, they would clammor to the wire if they thought I was going to throw some on the fly pen floor, and then proceed to gobble it up like candy. Obviously they really liked it.
There are some seeds they won't eat because they don't like the taste. In some of the treat mix I give to the kit birds their is this little flat brown seed which I don't know the name of, but man, none of the kit birds will even touch it. Obviously they don't like the taste of it...lol.

Hi brian......that little flat brown seed may very well be linseed, also known as flaxseed - it usually has a shiny sheen to it. I mix it into my "treat mix" and it is given to my birds when they are molting. it has a high oil and fat content and is supposedly beneficial to the birs when they are molting. yes, my birds do eat it but it takes unaccustomed birds a while to get used to it.

Sure they taste their food. Try giving them peanuts for a few times and watch their behavior. They can smell also, they smell the red grit when it is around and the can find it when they require it.
