recently my last two rollers were just stolen from me... I am not very happy.. they were just on thier first clutch of eggs.. Does anyone out there have any extra birds they will be willing to get rid of, and help me get started again... remember that anything can happen, so expect the unexpected...

Hey Roller Freak, Where are you located. I'm going to guess between Fresno and Los Angeles.. I ask becuase it will be easier for guys close to you to help.. My guess is because those two area's and Las Vagas seam to be loaded with Scum Bags who steal birds.. They have ran a few good rollermen out of the hobby.. They stole all my friend Kevin McRae's birds so much, he just quit and he was a recognised Master flyer.. What makes you think when you get more rollers, they won't just help them selves to your new birds? They usually do till they get caught. Then they slap them on the wrist and turn them loose to steal from someone else.. Ahhh what ever happened to a short rope and a tall tree? LOL KGB

Get a working line German Shepherd. It will scare the liver out of any 2 legged and 4 legged predators. http://www.cichlidlovers.com/bestfriend.htm

Alan, since you work with german sheperds what's the best way to stop them from eating your birds or critters? I have a german shepard cross with a shepard breed that starts with a M that is supposed to be for police and protection from a friend but she loves eating my pigeons and chickens. She is still young though at about 9 months old.

Dave, I'd dig a hole big enough for a 9 month old dog LOL! Seriously, I had dogs growing up and I had one that would always get after my birds. I had to divide my yard to where the dogs had their own side and the birds had enough room to land, etc. without having to go near the dogs.

Hello Dave,
Q) You want to stop your dog from killing your birds?
A) My suggestion would be to tie the dead animal onto the dog's collar and leave it secured on that dog until it literally rots off(a few weeks time). Believe me old poochie will NOT want to repete the same mistake again! "In the warmer summer months this works extreamly well!"

Dave,
The M breed of dog you have is most likely Malinois. Malinois x German Shepherd crosses make excellent dogs, possibly even better than the purebreds themselves. I know the purists will cringe at that! ;)
Anyway, these types of dogs have extremely high prey and hunt drives and will kill other animals and birds in a heartbeat if given a chance. These drives are like a cat's but in a dog's body. You have to expect that from them. If they are lacking in these drives they aren't good working dogs anyway.
The simplest method is to lock up your dog when your birds are flying.
If you need to train them to leave them alone, the best method is with an ecollar (electronic collar). They give an electronic shock from the collar controlled by you with a hand held remote control device. These are excellent training devises.
During training, EVERY TIME he chases or shows any prey instincts towards your birds give him a jolt with the ecollar at the time he starts after the birds. Don't let him associate you with giving the jolt or he'll think he can kill one when you aren't around. Don't correct him yourself by yelling at him, let the ecollar do it.
But you must be consistent by letting him near the birds at a specific time when you can jolt him and do it every single time he is allowed near the birds.
It shouldn't take long and he'll start fearing the birds, believing every time he shifts into prey towards them he gets jolted.
It's used very effectively to train a police dog not to accept food from strangers in the same manner. In training a stranger offers him food and every time he goes for it, he gets jolted by the ecollar. A hungry but well trained Police dog won't even go near a raw steak a stranger offers him.
Here's a good ecollar and some more info on them: http://www.leerburg.com/equip.htm#ecollar
I bought mine at PetCo for a lot less money and it works fine for me. I believe it was only about 60.00

Hey Allen, No cringe here at all.. Just one thing, do they call these Malinois x German Sheperds Pure German sheperds? Do people sell the pups from these crosses as German sheperds? Would AKC Call the crosses German Sheperds? I know this will make the Mongrelizers cringe. GRIN.. Mongrel Lofts

Thanks Alin. Yes she is a malinos cross with a german sheperd. She was given to me by a friend that trains them for protection. I will try what you suggested to see if it will work. She does have a high prey drive.

LOL.. good one Mongrel.
But the thing is, most Police Depts couldn't care less if they are Mongrels or not, just so they perform! Worrying about purebreds is for breeders that have to sell them to the public who mistakenly believes they have a better dog because it's pure and has papers.
But I'll give you this, good Police Dogs are not color bred. They couldn't care less how rare their colors are or how pretty, just so they perform.

To stop a pair of beagles from chasing deer -Ishot a deer -skinned it out and left the head on.Then Igot myself aPlastic 50 gal. barel with alid-put the dogs one at atime in the barrel with the deer hyde and head and rolled it down the hill in my yard..it didnnt hurt them a bit.but there is something about going around in cyrcles in the dark at a high rate of speed wile the thing you used to chase is beating the heck out of you.For the next couple of days I would lift the head out of the barrel and the dogs reacted like satan had just appeared! who knows it might work with birds.-Just be humain--not a steep hill.Believe me they never ever wanted anything to do with deer again. They were happyer --Not running deer al night-and so was I Mike

Rooler freak...Sorry to hear ya had your birds swiped. I hate when that happens. Quick story ...I had a couple gorgeous young squeekers stolen from my loft one day about 10 yrs ago. I figured if it was someone in the neighbourhood , calling the police and them seeing a police car at the house may make them a little nervous. The cop said the chances of me ever seeing these birds again was slim. Needless to say , my plan worked . Three days later on a friday eve , i got a call from the desk seargent at our local police station, claiming he had a couple young rollers in a box that might be mine. I thought someone was pulling my leg and cussed him out at first as we were having a few cocktails, and i was told earlier i'd likely not see them again. He told me if i didn't get my ass down there to claim them he was gonna have them for dinner ..lol. I scooted over to the police station as i was 2 blocks away , and sure enough , there were my 2 mth old sqeekers on the counter. A young boy and his mom said they found the box in their back yard several blocks from my home.So , seeing the police car at my house did make the thief nervous. I guess it's a little late for this to work for you , but i do feel sorry for your loss, and hope you have had success in locating some more birds to get you back on track. Happy breeding mate.

Pigeon thieves are abundent in the cities. What I have found is it doesn't matter how many pigeons you get, they'll just get stolen again. Now, the question is... why would you want more birds? Why would you want some one to give you their best birds just for you to kiss them off for the thieves? I'm not saying that you shouldn't get birds, maybe it is time to call it quits or a while until things cool down. I agree with what Scott said. They'll just come back and back and back. Reminds me of the successful hunts of a resident cooper. You can bet it'll come back if it has scored a kill. Solve your pigeon thief problem or wait until you have moved. Other wise, you're just helping the pigeon thieves score more birds - bird they wouldn't have been able to score without your help.
I have helped a few kids score some darn good birds here in my area. Waste of birds because these birds were inturn stolen by their own friends or neighbors. I personally have helped a fellow four times with birds, all four times they were stolen. Go figure. Kids will be kids.
