I recieved a bunch of rollers and have paired the cocks and hens,I have them in a breeder loft. They are already hard at it and I had seven extra cocks that are 10 mos. old and have never been out before. I have them in a kit box and I have let them out in the last three days and was wondering what was the best way to get them to fly?
They are on a diet of 16% mix 3/4c, and remember I am new at this.

I have seen alot of talk about predators(hawks)and was wanting to know what time of the year they go? I live in Oregon.
Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks Mark

When you open your kit box what is the reaction of your birds?

If they just remain in there I have a towel that I have mounted by screws on the end of a 1 X 2 piece of a 4 ft long board. This will scare them out and you can wave it to keep them airborn.

They have gotten lazy on you and they may have a little fear that keeps them from wanting to fly. They are out of shape as well. Make sure you do not over feed them. 1/2 cup of feed for 5 birds is plenty once a day.

Why did you wait so long before you flew them?

Thanks for your input nicksider, When I open the door they come right out and fly from rooftop to rooftop they fly real antsy. They fly around in small circles maybe one time a round and then land back on the rooftop and then fly from rooftop to ground and back to the kit box and then repeat it. I have left the door open
so they can come in and out, until they get used to it.
I think after a week I will try and train them to use the trap door. Should I scare them so they will fly higher or should I wait until they get in shape? How long does it take?
The reason why they have never been out before is because I got them from a guy who never let them out because he was afraid of the hawks getting them. I know nothing about their bloodline, but thay are really goodlooking birds. I got them just under 3/4c a day of mix.

Still wondering about the hawks! Thanks Mark

Do you have a trap so when they enter thier kit box they cannot get out or do they just have free passage in and out?

the winter or spring will be the best season becasue hawks are out at that time. I live in Caifornia, I let my pigeon out on spring. II only let my rollers fly once a week in summer becasue that is when hawks are in the move.

Finally got the whole kit to fly They fly anywhere from a half hour to forty five mins. at a time once a day. Been doing this for about a week now and yesterday had a Hawk attack and lost two birds. Watched him take them out of the air. Was wondering if anyone out there would have any ideas on how to deter the hawks from my area, I am open to all suggestions. Thanks for any and all info. it is appreciated.

I'd like to raising pigeons again, I've been away from it for many many years. Where do I start? This question is for anyone.

First make sure you have your "plant" set up before you get the birds. Have your breeder loft set up and your kit box(s). It is hard to start managing birds before you have a suitable place to manage them.

Second find a good breeder in your area that has birds for sale or available. Pick your birds out the air and not off the perch.
