Any medicating of the birds should have been done before you started breeding. Why are you worming them? Did you see any worms? If it's preventative maintenance then you take care of all that before you put the birds down.Wormer is a poison and I wouldn't use it on birds with young in the nest. I only worm my birds twice a year. The breeders are wormed 6 weeks before they are put down and then again after the breeding season. The kit birds are wormed 6 weeks before my my first fly and again at the end of the fly season. Some worm their birds before every fly.My question is, if you managed a world class sprinter would you give them a laxative before each race? The answer is no, so why would you give birds a poison before each fly? I know some one that does this before every fly. Well last year he had a very nice team that was a world cup class in quality. This team scored over 700 points and received 1.6 X1.5 quality and depth on the fly before the world cup fly. They where all found dead in the kit box and the second team was found dead also after being wormed to get ready for the big fly.

I believe the active ingredient in Wazine Is Piperazine. It is one of the safest wormers out for most animals. It is particularly effective against round worms (ascarids). However it is tot effective against hairworms ( Capillaria) and the are the deadliest. If used at the recommended dosage and only for a 24 hr. period It is quite safe.I would not hesitate to worm a breeder pair IF THEY NEEDED IT but would not do so unless I was pretty sure they needed it. Tapp,
I wrote an article about Demetrious Earth and you can find it in the 'Roller Article' tap on the side of this page. Read it and might give you an alternative way to use wormers for the time being.

I thought it was 1 oz. per gal. but wanted to be sure. The reason was I'm going to worm my kit birds I got 2 04 birds that started coming doen early. Could be a number of things. And also I been flying 6 squeekers fot about 10 days now and one of them feels light. And they all seem to eat the peas and milo and wheat egualy as far as I can see.And I probly over feed if any thing.Sometimes if I ain't carful they will get on the ground before trapping. and I have chickens that run all over the yard. I try not to let them but once in awhile they still manage to get there. aand I haven't wormed my kit birds or any birds since aug.05. Thanks for info. John I wonder what the guy used that killed his kit birds or how much he used? ---------- Tapp

Tapp I believe he used wazine. I think the dosage was wrong judging the end result but it could have been that we flew every three weeks in our club. He would worm the birds before every club fly and any big fly in between.

Good artical Jay! Could you use it in a nylon stocking hanging in fly pen instead of seven dust. I haven't used seven yet because I haven't got a lice problem yet. I store my grains in 7 gal buckets with screw on lids. They will hold 50# of grain not quite a full bag of game breeder pellets I feed my breeders. I know bugs can get in them but I haven't found evidence yet. I keep my lofts and kit boxes real clean. and plenty of ventalation to keep moister out.I want to get a microscope to check there crap. Even my mules and dogs and chickens to see what worms they have. I'll have to get a book on paricites. But it would be fun to learn. One of my good friends is a vet. he can tell me what referances to get. John thanks for replying on reason it could have been for them dying. ---------- Tapp

Tapp,
Yes you can use DE and hang it from a stoking. That is what I am doing. I don't have parasite problem but when the weather breaks and the humidity arrives the DE would have worked itself into the loft bedding and the loft cracks and to prevent the parasite especially red mites from coming including spiders, flies, flees and ants.
I started mixing DE with the feed when I purchased feed that contained Weaver worms. The birds don’t mind it and it works as a continual de-wormer for them to combat internal and external parasites. Also it contains some needed minerals and vitamins.
DE is not expensive; a 10lb bag is about $2.99. So it is worth it. You can use it on your dog or cat bedding to eliminate flees also. Good luck…
