I know this is a forum primarily for the Birmingham Roller, but I am hoping that some have had experience with the American Roller.

How frequent are they in comparison to Birminghams? Do they kit as well as Birminghams?

I know nothing about american rollers-- but I am curious--are american rollers a strain that originated in the U.S. or are they some kind of mix with birmingham. If not what is there history? If they are a cross then how are they called american?
just wondering

I had American Rollers back in the 60s. They were high flyers and very deep rollers, but then I knew nothing about feed at that time. I am surprised if there are any of the original bloodlines left. I heard they had all been crossed with Pensoms or Orientals. I believe Brian McCormick has them. Maybe he can help us out. YITS, Cliff

I have some American Rollers, but mine are just for show. I don't fly them. I know a fellow show guy who has them just for flying, and has had them for decades. He lives in the area of the Northwest where the breed was originally created. He says his fly well and in the air, about the only difference he notes is that his don't particular break in groups. He knows a few guys who once competed with the American Rollers and actually won a big fly with a kit of them.

Hi,

I just joined this forum today and saw your posting on Americian Roller. I started breeding and flying Americans about three years ago and have found them very similiar to the Birminghams in flight and rolling ability. My stock came from Don Lehman out in Portland, OR who is kind of the Grandfather of the Americans. He's had the same family of birds since the late 40's. Talk is that the Americans came from the same bloodlines as the pre Pensom North American Highflying Rollers. However, the Portland area guys wished to have birds that could compete with the Birminghams in their flies. They started selecting for tighter kitting, tighter shorter rolling etc. Some say that Birminghams were crossed into them to help this along. A true Flying American (as opposed to the show strains) has a slightly diff type than the Birminghams. They tend to have a slighly fuller/rounder head especially over the back. Their beaks are also medium length at the longest. They are required to have pearl eyes, clean beaks and clean toenails. They come in most every color but you see alot of red and yellow badges, mottles, etc. My birds kit extremely well but tend to be a little on the short side when rolling. They are not very deep and not a frequent as I would like. I also have to be careful how I feed them or they go into orbit and fly for hours.Much more than a Birmingham will. I guess it goes back to the old blood. Hope this answers some of your questions.
