I have 5 rollers with me now. i bought it from a man that never lets his pigeon fly ever. does it affect them. they are born in a small cage and was never flew until now. now that they are 5 years old, they dont seem to fly at all. they just sit on the roof top and relax. whenever i try to make them fly, they just come back home or stay on the roof. They never flew, so i think they can't fly. i;m going to get rid of them soon and get some good roller REAL ROLLERS

I'm as new or newer than you are to rollers ( any pigeon for that matter ), but it sounds like they just aren't ready to fly yet. Their muscles can't be in condition for any lengthy flight, I'd just keep letting them out and let them build up to flying... JMHO.

I would recommend that you find a flyer in your local area that has some for sale. Have him fly them for you and you pick the once you like from the air. This will speed your process up and you can quickly begin to enjoy the hobby.

The birds you have now need a whole lot of work even if they were owned by an experienced roller person. If the owner never flew them he probably has no idea of the quality. To get them in flying shape you will have to fly them twice a day and use tennis balls to keep them up off of the roofs and a "flag" tp keep them from returning to the loft. It will take awhile; maybe weeks before they will even fly.....then you got to keep them on the same program until they get into enough shape to begin to roll.

I would start over again with a real roller person who flies. There are some real nice guys out there. Some of the better birds may cost you some money, but it may be money well spent if you get the right birds.

You can get the names of a lot of breeder from this website or the nbrc website.

What city and state are you living?

I'm afraid that you're just wasting your time with 5 year old birds that have never been flown.

With the amount of good birds around this country....I would do like nick said....buy a kit of sqeekers or young birds from a repitable fancier that will breed you a round and get some good birds. Fly them out and pick the best and put them together.

I wrote an article called "Starting out" look in the Feature Article section on this site. It may help you!

I would hate to say it...but those birds flying again...is not very good odds...all they are now is hawk bait. So keep them and use them as Foster parents to your new proven birds. Nick explained the quickest and easiest way.

Now is the time that a lot of breeders are starting to breed again. So you may get lucky. Tony has birds for sale. I could get you a round...but it would be a couple months away because I have to breed for myself and a friend.
